C'mon Honda, you gotta build this for me!!!
These pictures just really make me drool, I want a legal 650R so bad I can taste it!!
I had the first year XL600R that I bought brand new and loved it! (Dont you always wonder what the hell you were thinking when you sold that bike?) The least Honda could do is give me that water cooled engine in the XR650L!!! While their at it, I'll take a CB1300F also...

pff.... CRF450R street legal PLEASE! my god that would be insanely fun in the twisties.
My buddy has a 650r street legal here in cali... got it in before the laws were put into place.
Im sure in kansas you can take a dirtbike and make it street legal fairly easy.

No unfortunately that is not the case! I have been told that they have even rejected tagging ones that were legal and tagged in other states! I have checked into getting it done here and I dont think it's possible so I have started looking into tagging it in another state! But if Honda would just build me a XR650L in a liquid cooled motor and Supermoto the problem would be solved! Lol.............

wow... and i thought california was the only state stuck up on the dirbike conversions.
what honda needs to do is take the CRF450R motor... and put it in something like this

I'm a big boy, need a big Thumper, I just dont feel like a 450 would do it for me! I think quite a few states are cracking down on conversions from what I have read!

Both bikes would be awesome. I think the big 650 would be more of a practical approach because the motor is less specialized and overbuilt compared to the 450 mill. Either way, Honda would sell a bunch. I'd be a customer for sure!!!!

The one I posted is street legal. Notice the mirror and license plate?
He put USD forks from a smaller dirt bike, hid the sub frame, and installed CBR600F2 wheels with Pilot Power tires. Click the link above the photo in my original post about it and you will see it in greater detail.

Hey, CA politics/policy sucks my dick rain or shine. They took my state and turned it into pink tofu eating Latte smacking pimple dick-fancy and this is sin. I got me a relative that came up from Baja to live here in Santa Barbara in the 1690's. Family on mom's side has been here since. This **** place died in the 60's and has been stinking ever since. Whenever someone says "As goes California, so goes the Nation" Slug that person as hard as you can in the crotch, man or woman.
Rant over.
"American Honda, you are stationed here in California. Please pull your heads out of your asses and build us what WE WANT, not some committee jazzy useless tech cluster fuck. If you want my business back a couple more times before I vapor lock, you will do this. The 250-450-650 SM line would be a fab start. Just super fab, baby!!!!"
Dave
PS: No air cooled caca offering ancient fucking mill underpowered need $2,000 in hop up stuff bike, puleeeeeze!

I did a track day yesterday and there was a guy on a CRF450X supermoto. Damn, that guy was fast! I was doing 130mph trying to keep up with him. And he could corner like I only dream of!

case and point.... a CRF450R would be even more impressive. they would just need to take the CRF450R motor and make it to where the engine side could hold at least 1.5quarts of oil, and they would be set!

They make you feel you're a kid on Briggs and Straton mini bike poaching the back lanes.
They're light, they handle dirty back roads well with the long wheelbase and wide bars, they crash well with no plastic, they're easier to work on than a lot of current dense pack engines.
Those 450ish ones are a bit hand grenade with the short space between service and the high strung motor but they sure are fun and light. The 600s are a bit more mellow for all day riding but heavier and all that goes along with that.

Yeah, but Dave what do you really think?
Honda doesn't have the balls to build what you want.
"The lack of vibes thuout the whole rev range left me impressed too." page 054, August issue of "Visor Down". Nice little 8 paragraph article on the 690R. From what I hear, the old ones used to shake.
Think KTMs are too $$$? Buy a nice used one.

I guess this is what happens to any company that turns into a giant and really goes down the commitee / board members / accountants-running-the-show path (especially after it's founder, the man that initially had the vision, passes away).
There's a lot of large companies that have good engineers and designers, who's efforts and ideas are constantly thwarted, underminded or watered down by bean counters that run the show.

I'd be an SM'er so fast. I'd find some way to come up with the scratch. Danke and I are on the same page with the CRF-blow up grenade potential. Everybody should understand that as these motors exist, they are real thoroughbreds and require some backup cash to finance. How about those Aprillia V twins? Are they not a hoot????

There was one of those at the track the other day as well. Another guy that was blindingly fast and cornered like he was on rails. The taller bikes would have me a bit cautious in the corners but these guys had them laid over at ridiculous lean angles! It was pretty cool to follow these guys through the corners.

Both Husqvarna and KTM make nice turnkey Motard that are steet legal. Lots of folks on the DR400 too but compared to the euro bikes it's a bit weak & heavy.
My 610 like in Zaq's post is great compromise for me since I can run it for 6+ hours on the highway for a weekend, and not have to pull an oil change.

this one?
as stated above, they are so light and agile it makes up for the lack of HP. my wr250 barely makes over 30HP and it's by far the funnest bike I've ever owned.

I've always wanted a supermotard.
Some day I will either buy or build one. As I've built and worked on countless 450 machines for practicality I would stick to a 650 based motor. As stated by a few above 450 motors are time bombs. I've blown the 2 of mine 6 times in 4 years.

FYI:
Untill Honda went the injection route, the Troy Lee SM team bikes of Henry, Ward and Pingree all used the head off the 450X. Depending on the track, 450X gearsets were used as well.

Added to the above issues is neither 250 or 450 4strokes are balanced cranks from the factory and are a press together 3 part crank. the big end of the rod gives up a lot in both motors in all the major manufactures motors.
Truing welding and balancing the crank goes along way for longevity and smooth operation but they still give up he ghost eventually. although it takes much much longer. The Race motors I am involved with I have the crank rebuilt every year with new bearings and new thrust bearings.
If you have a 250 or 450 Honda and have brass looking shavings show up in the filter do your self a favor and tear the motor down before it locks up and your out cylinder piston and possibly case halves. All of them do it but the hondas seem to be the most often as far as I can tell is it's do to heavier crank and piston and longer stroke than the rest causing a larger imbalance but I have seen every major make lock the big end up multiple times.
So I if were to build a street worthy moto it'd be the much more robust and less spun 650 machines.
