Buying the Super Tenere

I am planning on going up to the IMS show in Michigan on Jan. 8th to see the Super Tenere. Assuming there isn't anything that I find hideous about the bike in person then I am going to put down the deposit and order one in black. Should make a nice garage mate for the 919.

I really like the looks of Tenere. But the FZ1 gets my vote for a new bike

You're right! A 10 gallon tank would be more appropriate.

The triumph went off my list when I saw the chain. I want my second bike to have shaft drive. I have never had one before and I might hate it but it is not optional for this purchase.

+1

I would deal with a little more weight and a couple less horses to be rid of the cleaning/adjusting/lubing & noise of a chain.

Pauli, I just noticed you live a whole 10 miles away from me. Ive only seen one 9'er around here, it must have been you. My last bike was a shaft drive, and it was very nice not having to mess with it. The Tenere would benefit from a shaft drive especially if you planned on using it as a dual sport.

Man I don't know how many of you guys have spent any time off road, but I just can't even begin to imagine over 500lbs worth of bike and gear off road. That would be absolute hell unless your just going down a dirt road.

What!!!!

We are getting the brand new 2011 updated Speed in New Zealand.

Not sure about the headlights but the rest looks AOK, more power/torque and less weight.

Giggity

I don't get those 'adventure' bikes - too big, too heavy and mostly sub-par off road. Man I remember fatting around when younger on XR500's big XT Yammys - good off road and acceptable on the tarmac between the gravel.

I ride a pig. My KLR is a sow. Not a 500 lb sow, but a sow none the less. I saw a group of guys on one of my favorite mountain roads on Beemers. They were standing around one guy who looked flustered. I asked if they needed a hand.........NO!

Got to the bottom of the hill and caught one of the guys. Asked me if I knew where he could get a quart of oil cause his bud punched a hole in his valve cover. Big bikes, but Pig Bikes.

I know the little Triumph is lighter, but it's still a piglet.

It's all a trade-off unless you pick up a Beemer HP-2.

I can't imagine thrashing a 14K bike around in hard core dirt situation regardless of weight. Here is my thought process on purchasing this:

I have the garage space and disposable income to pick up a second bike this year. I decided that I wanted something more comfortable to ride with my Dad and his Goldwing and hopefully something the wife will ride with me on occasion. I had pretty much decided on a ST1300 when I saw the Tenere. Compared to the ST1300 this bike is 200lbs lighter and should be able to handle the gravel/dirt roads in my area.

That's exactly what I would want one of these for. Let us know what you think of it once you get some decent riding weather.

Granted this bike is set up with knobbies but I believe even with the stock more street oriented tires it will do all I ever want to do in the dirt.

I hope this works.

That guy in the vid was good, no doubt. But I'd have liked to have seen all the out takes. I'm sure that wasn't the first time he'd been down that road. He barely got out of that one hole. Who would risk something like that if they were 100s of miles from home? I sure wouldn't do that to a new $13 bike.

Not too many Tenere riders will ever venture off road.

Rod you are right. Most of these bikes will never see dirt. Mine will most likely never see anything like in the video.

Bigdaa first time I ride this thing to Cali I will swing by and buy you a drink. you wouldn't happen to be anywhere close to Fresno would you?

I like your style Hoosier. Good luck with the purchase. My Tiger1050 is a similar bike (in theory?) and fills the exact role you defined for the SuperT.

Why not hit up the Chicago show a bit later in Feb....isn't it closer to you?

Chicago would be slightly closer but I really hate going there. Also, I want to see the bike as soon as I can so I can put the deposit down and get the bike ordered.

Gonna be over 15 grand after fees. Wow....I've got a total of 7800 in my 07 919 and my 09 KLR 650.(both bought used, but low miles and mint)) I'd have to put over 7 grand with that to get the Tenere and I STILL wouldnt be able to pronounce it.......guess I'll be on the chain gang a little longer..... with 2 bikes and money in the bank.

It isn't cheap but there isn't a cheap bike that does what I want to do. A KLR 650 would be essentially useless to be. The Tenere for what I want to do is closer to an ST1300 than a KLR.

I'm looking more at the 800 tripple Triumph. I think either bike would be exceptional, price withstanding, but the Yammie would have it fully loaded two up. Those big pistons would be cake.

I like these bikes too. The S10 and all of the ones in its class. They are truely all in one bike. To put it in terms of Hondas. You get ergos somewhere between goldwings and ST1300. Cornering clearance of a 919/599. And a suspension that makes frost heavs (really bad speed bumps for you southerners) fee like riding over a pensile. And lugage that makes any road touring bike gelouse. And of coarse if one wanted to go off road, they are more capable of it than just about any other streetbike. Heavy or not.

I'm infatuated by the 800xc at the moment. I could see myself ording one of those in a moment of weakness. Of coarse in a perfect world i'd build one like Birdman is doing. Sure wish he would give an update soon on that project.

While i still really like the S10 I haven't put down a deposit. It was supposed to arrive in May but now it is looking more and more like it won't be here until August or maybe even September. I really don't want to buy a new bike in September and then have to look at it all winter.

I'm interested in the Super Tenere as well, local dealer told me they're special order only though and I'd never consider buying a bike I haven't ridden, let alone even seen in person.
