Tempted - CB550 Four

I don't need another project, but I am more than tempted by this...

http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/mcy/508678211.html

Bet I could buy it for $750, looks like it would clean up great. A few hours of polishing and detailing, replace a few rubber pieces, stick some tires and an exhaust on it and I'm a teenager again!

Someone talk me out of it, I haven't even started on the 67 BSA Thunderbolt project yet, the Alfa Spider needs work to sell in the spring, and we already have the two Hornets and a cruiser.

But then again, it does need a good home...

At that price you can't go wrong. The CB550 will run trouble free forever.

I looked at a '77 in my area. Mostly stock, except for some chrome engine bits, and a nearly perfect Kerker exhaust. Original bass boat orange glitter, crispy vinyl seat, dry rotted tires, runs, but not well. $600.00 seems like a bargain, but I want a 2 stroke project.

Cool bike. I had a 1978 (?) Could never get the title though. Make sure the seller has the (#'s match) title.

Definitely not getting any help here. If I was closer, I would be all over that bike. I would love to get my hands on an older CB in that kind of condition.

Ok, I went to check it out today. Interesting experience, the owner is Russian and works at a Russian used car lot, was like stepping into another country when I entered the office.

Anyway, the bike looks pretty good, has a less than perfect repaint with runs on the tank, but pretty much all original other than a header. Engine is clean, rubber pieces are still pliable, no visible leaks, seat is in excellent condition, everything works, and it fired right up with the electric starter. Serge said it hadn't been started for a couple of weeks, idled quite well though. Couldn't ride it, streets are still icy, but I'm definitely interested. He has clear title also.

He's in no hurry to sell it, doesn't sound like he will let it go cheap, probably take a grand to buy it I'm guessing. Told me to come back on a day when the roads are clear and take it for a ride, said I was the only one that had called on it.

Hmm, do I have anything that I'd rather spend $1000 on right now???

Sounds like a buy. If you have the time to mess with it, do it!

Reminds me of when my son called me on my cell to talk him out of an '04 Mustang GT Convertable, black on black. Yeah right!
He drove it home that night.

Well the guy emailed me today and said he had someone else look at it, says he turned down $900. Don't know if that's true or not, but sounds like it will take his full asking price to buy it. Probably still not a bad deal at $1100, don't know if I love it enough to buy it though, didn't really speak to me, you know?

Two things:

Does anyone remember that episode of the Simpsons where Homer is trying to pop-start a Russian car and the guy is yelling "Put it in K!!! Put it in K!!!"

I still yell that every time we have to bump start something at work.....

Anyway:

After reading this all I say buy it, but only if you're gonna be dedicated to it this Winter and get it where you want it....which sounds like it won't take much to do so.

So yeah buy it and ride it although I'm with JohnnyB....and thought you all might like to see some cool pics of a CB550 all Cafe'd up........

That is just cool as hell!

Still thinking about it, definitely a nice old bike, just have a mental block paying $1100 for it.

I love the old Honda CB bikes they are nearly bullit proof, but I think the 550s were only made a few years to it may be hard to find parts.
