VIN Decode

Does anyone know how to read a VIN? I googled it but didn't get the answer I was looking for. Is this part of the number (M000215) the order it rolled off the line? The build date is November 2001 so I would assume it would have been pretty early on. I just noticed it for the first time tonight when I had the headlight pulled off. Current Build (5).jpg

[The remaining characters in the VIN string help to identify it as unique to ensure that no two sets of motorcycle VIN numbers are identical.]
The last 6 numbers are sequential from the first bike off the assembly line that year to the last one.

The first three letter and number are the W.M.I. World manufacturer identifier.
The next 5 letters and numbers are the V.D.S. Vehicle descriptor section.
9th character is a check digit.
Next is year. Then plant id code.
The last 6 are V.I.S. Vehicle indicator section.
This number system is for product built after 1981.

Thanks for clarifying. I guess its obvious that they would start with 000000 and end with 999999. So I guess I have # 215 then.

I have an '02, #000003. That would be the third hornet 900 made.
