i've been calling my drag bike "The Tinman" but i might also nickname him, "Chainripper". I run a ....pardon, RAN a 520 race chain on my bike. the same chain for about 7 years i think. last Sunday i was loading my bike to head to the track, attaching a ratcheting strap to the left side footpeg bracket. my sight lined up with the drive chain, 6 inches under my nose.
where i saw the following. initial anger was replaced by relief at how close i potentially came to catastrophe.
Bucky I had a professional look at your chain and he picked up on something I had completely overlooked as just dirt. He asked why there were metal shavings all over your chain? He also stated the only time he has ever seen a chain do that is when it is misaligned.
LDH: well, then he's never seen a chain that was left on a bike while aluminum grinding operations were ongoing on another component
my nitrous solenoids, fuel pump, and pressure regulator are mounted to an aluminum plate that sits where the exhaust up-pipe used to be, right in front of the shock absorber. i have on a couple occasions ground, cut, sanded, and slotted parts of the aluminum plate and was a little messy doing it.
also: messing up my cases would be a catastrophe, but no mention of you being glad i didn't wind up with the nickname "Pegleg" ! (youre right: the cases are more important. i'm pretty sure i could always grow a new leg)
the best part is, a week ago Sunday i get to the track and start prepping. i open my nitrous bottle...well, i can't because it's already open. and apparently, i had left the hose fitting a little loose because the bottle is stone empty. thankfully, another competitor, Jim, loaned me his 2.5 lb bottle for the day.
this most recent sunday, when i discovered the chain issue, i went to the track to return his (refilled) bottle. drove the ragtop out with my wife. Jim runs several different Busa's. the one he was running this time is a naked Busa with a dry shot. as i see him riding back to the pits, i notice that he is running his bottle upside down, which means he has nitrous bottles with no siphon tube inside.
i had run his borrowed bottle the week before right side up! so i was only skimming nitrous gas off the top: not pulling liquid nitrous from the bottom as is required.
so chances are, IF i hadn't screwed up and IF i had run his bottle upside down as it should be run, i would've thrown a few dozen more horsepower through that chain.

if you thought i was lucky before, how about now?
you dont have to be religious to believe that there might be some higher power looking over people.... i think you have someone lookin over you man!
the new chain is on its way (right LDH ?) and the track is open saturday, sunday, and monday...weather permitting...so we shall see !
i can't imagine the chain would take too many hard nitrous hits in that condition, so i reckon it's not been that way for too long. man, the track has been sticky and i have been putting some strain on it!
if i give credit to a higher power now, ought i logically blaspheme over the injuries i HAVE received in the past?
xr, what's the latest with your bike? fueling? do you ever intend to run it at the strip?
I just have not had the time to touch it for the past 3 weeks. I have a new chain, front and rear sprocket sitting there for a week now that I hope to get on this weekend. I also had to install a lockup clutch that solved my slipping problem but now the seals around the case extension plate are leaking oil when under boost. So now I've got to look into that before I run it again. There got to be some kind of a crankcase venting issue, but I'm going to try putting sealer on the gaskets and go back together with it. Yeah I hope to do some runs at the track but it's starting to look like it may not happen until next year.
xr: "case extension plate" you mean the spacer for the lockup clutch? and paper gaskets therein? mine's a little tricky to keep dry too, but i'm sure a bunch of positive crankcase pressure doesn't exactly help.
when looking at DID specs, they list the weight of their chains in "lbs per 100 links" i think, and the chain that i just bought via LDH at Kyle Racing Engines is a little heavier than my former.
also the broken chain was 138 link, the new one is 140 link. i THINK i was running around 63" wheelbase with the old chain and the slots for adjustment are pretty generous. i'll probably be around 64" with the new.

Yeah that's it. I don't understand why it's any different than without it. I know there's one extra gasket but heck the same amount of pressure being applied.

Perhaps its not been machined flat enough!....get some wet and dry stuck to a flat surface like glass, and rub it across to see if there are any low spots.
You could always put another breather in to help the pressure escape.
I use only the two gaskets on my lockup spacer plate without any need for gasket sealer.
