finally!

Well I finally got everything basically how I want it. I ordered a set back in November and when I put them on they were where I wanted them, but way too narrow to put on the master cylinder. (see first picture) I wanted them that far forward and I actually liked how narrow they were, so I went ahead and bought an aftermarket radial master cylinder to get it to work. Fast forward to when I actually get the new master cylinder, its cold as hell and my bike is in storage. So finally once I get my bike back and have some decent weather I decide to put it on. Got it on and try for about an hour to get all the air out of the brake line, didnt happen. And I had to stop so I could go to work. I get back the next day and try again and then its when I notice that the seal around the piston is leaking. Awesome. So at this point im fed up with dealing with the crap brake cylinder and just asked Rob if he would exchange the short bars for some longer ones. Done deal. And he told me to ship him the master cylinder to see what the problem is. Just got the longer bars today and got them mounted up and they look great, and I can just use the OEM master cylinder. Took awhile to get them right but I am very happy with the end result.

If you are looking for good customer service, there is NOT a better person to deal with than Rob. He was always very quick to respond and when I had multiple options to choose from he gave me all of them in detail. I couldnt have done this without him.

Thank you again Rob,
-Aaron

Hey Rob.....PM sent....

I like the look of these ---- rise/drop looks good..... width around 28" would be perfect.

I should have TONS of room to rotate the bars forward for trackdays!

Heres the problem..... I can't get low and forward over the tank.....
LOL, and this is with my SATO rear-sets up and back & renthals rotated forward..... still not enough room!

It looks like I'm riding a big-wheel.......

I'd like to know about your master brake cylinder.

I've been thinking about replacing the OEM unit with something like you have.

Since I have yet to hear of anyone complaining about pain or that they don't work, I'd say they're a success. I'll be ordering a set in a month. Hope there's availability when I finally have my money ready. I needs 'em.

No complaints at all.
I REALLY like them. They're well made, well designed, and work as advertised.

No other set of bars can be set for casual street use and also adjusted for the track.
No other set of bars can be adjusted exactly how you want them set.

...and by "well made" and "well designed", I mean someone really knows what they are doing.
I get paid to find design problems (I get paid to break shit), and there are some little details with these bars that say very good things. I hope Rob is making some money on these. If he is, it's probably not a whole lot.

I hope he's profiting too.

TT, do you dominantly use the bars in "race" position, or "tour"? And how tall are you? I'm thinking I'm going to need all 28" wide 1-1.5" in add height and probably the 5 deg. drop. I'm 6-1 and want to sit more upright. Plus I usually get hand pain on the outer heels.

I am 6' 2" and have them set so the banjo fitting on the brake cylinder is right in the curve of the instrument console.
In other words they are a few inches more forward and down, and slightly narrower.
Pic:

This is how I have them set for street use. I like it better than the OEM position because I do not have to lean forward before taking the weight off my butt and onto the foot pegs.

For the track I would like to get them turned outward and further down.

You'll have no problems adjusting them to be higher than the OEM bars. Bar angle for hand position is also adjustable.
If you'd like your bars a whole lot higher, ask Rob about supplying the bars with longer upright sections.

Thanks TT. Yeah I saw the other post that shows two different stem lengths.
You've got yours sooooo flat, it's amazing! proof about the adjustability

This is one of those products that's amazing simple and so well thought out. I have pondered buying them many a time. Anyone who spends enough time on this forum is bound to buy them eventually.

Funny, they don't feel flat when I'm riding.

Last track day I was in the paddock next to a friend with a CBR1000rr and my bike almost looked like it was set up as a cruiser.
The 1000rr OEM bars are a few inches lower yet.

It took me a while.
Now I am debating weather to upgrade brakes or get a PC-III.

If you send him a PM, it usually takes a day or two to hear back.....For me, he usually answered e-mails in the afternoon.

When you do send him Paypal however...... you will get your item QUICK. (Mine even came Priority Mail --- 2 days)

If you have ANY interest I would start your series of PM's......... the set I bought, were the set on his bike --- you may want to get his wheels turning early to get another batch worked up.

I just bought a set of calipers, now I'm looking for the MC ('04-'07 GSX-R600/750)

These are all direct bolt-ons to the 919 forks and work with the 919 rotors.

On another note:
The GSX-R radial MC will allow me more room to adjust the TharBars
The downside is that I lose my OEM mirror mount along with the 919 master cylinder. Not an issue for the track, though I do use my mirrors in traffic!

Anyone know of a stand-alone mirror mount?

I've read a lot of the posts about these bars, and have seen the references to advantages when lane splitting. For someone thats really not that excited about riding between cars, whats the hook? The adjustability?

BTW --- look at how my throttle cables are positioned...... this helps a TON with clearance while using the GSXR Radial M/C.

Another pointer --- I've tried using 2 different sets of EBC Rotors with the RC-51 caliper/GSXR 19mm Radial M/C setup ---- absolutely hated it. They're waaaaay to grabby. I went back to the Honda OEM rotors ---- the brakes are smoooooth and strong......

This is how I had the cables originally, it didn't work out so well because the lever could hit the throttle cables if squeezed too hard.

Huh... My throttle cables are positioned the same!

It took a little getting used to reaching down for the starter button, though no real problem.

I do not have any plans on moving away from the OEM rotors.

Your levers... China knock-offs or the real expensive ones?
Many of the used master cylinders have bent, missing, or badly rashed levers.

I first got a job at Dell testing & then fixing returns. Then I moved over to their Server Development division and tested the prototypes. Long hours, lots of stress and lots of documentation. You have to run just to keep up with current tech. Every day.

I moved over to another company doing similar work and eventually migrated into their test development area. I'm not great at flogging other people to get their work done, so I didn't move into management. I am much better at working with things vs. people. I can get stuff to work and understand it. These are critical skills in "properly" breaking things.

"Hey, this thing is SUPPOSED to do this, yet it doesn't."
"Yea but YackYackYack.."
"Here are the numbers. Here is how I measured it. These are the specs YOU wrote. You need to fix your shit".

...over and over.

Well ... I have ridden several Nortons, one on the full Isle of Man TT course. Other than that ...

Annnnnnny way, there's news.

Another production run is in the works and should be available by the end of July. Essentially the same as the previous lot, there will be options for the height of the handle section risers (60 or 90mm), clamps as machined, machined and tumbled, and powder coated semi gloss black. Trying to find a place near me that does passivation, but until that pans out that's where things stand. I'll wait to see what my final costs are to determine the price, but it will be close to the previous run.

If anyone wants to put on a buy list just PM or contact me with the pertinent information. This run will be considerably larger than the previous one, but as I have developed contacts in Europe I hoping that will translate to faster sales across the pond, so don't assume that they will still be available a couple of months from now. Of course if they sell that quickly rest assured there will be another run even larger than this one.

Exciting times!

Rob

FINALLY ! I'm in on a run. Yaaaaay! Re-reading this thread gets me excited !

Also ordered my Airhawk seat cushion. Tried the wifes square a/h. Oh what a difference. That 1/2 inch opens up the legs nicely and the taller seat makes me feel more "visible".

My concern now is, do i order the short stems or the talls? I noticed those who have the taller stems have them clamped in the middle.

Any suggestions? I'm 6-1 with a 32 inseam.

Thanks
Rich

Small fish in a big pond

There were plenty of delays in the production of the components for my next run of TharBars (see title), but with a small proviso the they are ready to go! Well, most of them. The powder coated ones are about 2 weeks away.

The proviso? The supplier of the handle sections screwed the pooch in one small area: the clamp stubs weren't round. Not too far off, but far enough to prevent insertion into the clamps. I spent most of last week making a fixture to correct the problem and by the third try it started reliably rounding the tubing. What's life without a challenge, right?

Aaaaaany way, I have updated my site's order page to reflect the availability of the as machined and machined and tumbled finishes: Thar Engineering - TharBars
Btw, there are only 8 sets of the as machined sets available, so if you like the look order them as soon as possible.

Rob

I LIKE 'EM ! Mine came today and I thought it might take me a while to get them on. nOPE! Just fiddling around, before I knew it I was at pre-fit stage. Getting the over-under of the right lever was the only thing that I stumbled with. After that, slide and clamp, adjust, done.

I'm using them in a more or less "stock" position. Set for 5 deg. of drop, a little forward tilt and some pullback and viola ! No more pain. The bar hits all the way through my hands now. No pressure points. AND the added torso lean works wonders. I'm already "down" going into corners. Nice.

Minor nits. First one is on me. 24 was too narrow, 28 too wide. I'll be cutting down to 26 in the future.

Throttle shim works, but causes gap in control housing. No locating hole for left cluster. BUT, trim the nubs, add a strip of innertube, Solved.

99/100 ! Excellent fit and finish.

Wow. Now I sure have a better angle for my wrists than the stockers. I turned them every way imaginable, even upside down. It's amazing how many comfortable positions I could find. Finally settled with a somewhat conventional setup, but, took a file out and eliminated the two little protrusions from underneath the left switch control, so they wouldn't hit the tank at full left lock.

Great product!
