Pending purchase

Been looking at 919s for a while and found one (2002) for $2999 with 30k miles at a dealer. I am not local to the dealer so I am supposed to be getting more pics and info. soon via email.

I would like to get the price down considering the year and the mileage... thoughts?

HondaCrazy...

I may be off base here, but an 02 with 30k miles seems a big steep at $2999.

I picked my current '02 up with about 9500 miles for $4000 from a private seller.
I can't tell you when that was right off the top of my head, but if you PM me I can check the exact details (time/price/mileage) when I get home.

is it in PA? If so then it was probably stored winters as well, so that's a LOT for a few months out of the year of riding.

When I was buying a boat I found 5 of the exact same thing selling for cheaper than the local place I wanted to buy from. He took one look and said they are all from warm states and get run all year long, hence the cheaper price.

hmm, i am surprised by the high mileage comments... the asking price is $2999, that is not necessarily my buying price. i was thinking 2k-2200 as an offer. I know if I were to add just 1k to the asking price my options would open up pretty wide, but i am looking to get into something for less than 2.8k after all is said in and done. i know my chances with a dealer dropping that much are low too. thanks for the comments, i am trying to keep things in perspective and they help!

Why not buy from a private seller? You'll get more for your bargain there... I'm sure the actual going price on an '02 with 30k on the tach from a private seller will be around $2200-$2500 depending on mileage.

30,000 miles isn't necessarily a bad thing. Heck, I have 30,000 miles on my 919. I put 15,000 of those miles on myself.

As for the price. I think Andrewebay1 is right. If you could get it out the door (tax, title, license) from the dealer for $2,800, I don't think it would be a bad deal.

Are you looking at the one on CycleTrader that has a belly pan and has been painted black? http://www.cycletrader.com/find/list...f-919-97330506

Hmmm.. I'm liking the black with red decals scheme. Honda didn't put em out like that from the factory right?

Not in the US. It looks painted to me. 2002 only had the matte asphalt color. The one I posted a link to is more glossy and a deeper black. Looks like someone painted it to me

I've got over 34K on my '07 and it runs like new. The mileage wouldn't scare me unless it looked like it was poorly maintained. Some smokin' deals pop up on here from time to time.
Good luck with your purchase whatever you decide. I don't think $2999 is a bad deal for the value you are getting, but as other have said you may be able to do better.

I can't believe all our bikes are so worthless... They are almost the same as a late 70's early 80's KZ

30k = $2000
5k = $3-3500

Everyone has a story about getting a clean 919 for a bargain.
You should have that story, too.

If I could get that 30k bike for $2-2200 and it doesn't look beat, I'd jump on it.
Just be prepared to sink some coin into chain, tires, air filter, oil chain, potentially head bearings and wheel bearings... and the suspension will be shot so change the fork oil and find a used rear shock.

Sometimes a deal aint a deal unless it's a deal.

used 919s are a great value. however 30k miles for 3k seems like a bit much.

if it were me, i'd keep looking. But thats me

Why would any of this be an issue on a maintained 9er?

only you will ever know what you ultimately pay for it, so if you feel good about it, go for it and don't ever look back... some of the most satisfying purchases i've made were for above what others thought I should have paid, while some were for less.

Head bearings would be an issue with moderate abuse (wheelies).

Wheel bearings on most of my bikes go south after about 30k; it goes missed by many people.

Fork oil loses its usefulness after 5-10k, and seriously is useless after about 20k. That's just normal use.

Rear shock loses it's charge/damping in roughly the same mileage.

You can't take care of the bike to save these items... it's just wear and tear like tires and chains.

I just bought my 2004 919. It had 7200 miles on it, was in great shape, and I paid $3250 for it. I thought I got a great bargain.

My brother liked my bike so much he wanted one. He found a 2004 919, had 11,000 miles on it, was in even better shape than mine, and paid $2800 for it.

The bike you are looking at seems way overpriced.

My brother and I both bought our bikes from private sellers.

Check out this link.
http://www.craiglook.com/all.html?q=honda+919

It basically just searches all of the craigslists in all the states for what you are looking for. It's nice if you are willing to travel for a bargain, or just want to use it to see how much things are going.

Don't let these wankers scare you off. They mean well but if I listened to them, I'd have sold my ZX10R almost 17,000 miles ago when it had, 30,000 miles on it and it's an 04! Look for service records on this thing. Look for excess corrosion. These guys want to sell it to you no matter what so if you got another mechanic to give it a listen and take it for a spin, that would be the ticket. Low ball them if you just can't do without it, you know, like you're gonna do. Oh, se if the oil is dark and dirty in the sight glass. That means the dealer was too cheap to do jack shit to it.

I don't think we're scared of the mileage. Lord knows I'm not.

I think we're just saying that the mileage should equate in the price.

I agree with Bigdaa. If the bike looks in good shape go for it and have a good time. But then, I am not a shopper. When I find something I can't live without and it is priced within what I can spend I buy it. I don't even try and find one cheaper.

I do advocate getting the best deal but having it checked out to boot. I have a privateer mechanic whom I use for internals on my bikes. Others may not be as fortunate. The next best thing is a knowledgeable friend, in person, capable of filling in as the mech. In the absense of that it's ideas from total strangers?
HondaCrazy...........are they going to let you take it out?

Man.. I know there are deals to be had.. and I am not saying you should pay $2999 for a ragged out pile of 2002 919.. but a well maintained 30k 2002 919 at a dealer is probably worth $2999. Take the deal if you can't find a better one and if the bike is sound. $3k is pretty much chump change these days. Not all markets are the same. Price is relative to where you are. Can you find newer with less miles in better shape for less? If so go there.. otherwise take what ya can get. I think it's a perfectly fair price, assuming it's a sound machine of course... IMO.

If they do not allow a test ride I will not be purchasing. I do not have the luxury of a buddy in that area of the state to give a 3rd party opinion. I am in no rush and the folks selling have not got back to me with additional info. so they may not be in a rush to sell. I appreciate all the feedback. I think the first bike i bought back in 2001 was a Kawi 92 EX500, it was like $2300 out the door. my other 2 were F4i's, at around $5k, it is surprising to see what a 9'ner goes for.
For me, the funnest part of a new bike is the search so patience is not a prob. I would love the adj. suspension and the clock of the new ones, but I do not want to spend over $3k so...

30K is nothing for miles on a machine that you can ride to 100K. Head bearings are not anything to worry about too much either. I checked mine at 85K and they were fine (lots of wheelies done). If it looks good and looks to be maintained, go for it. Of course try to get it for as low as you can. Good luck!

def look at the oil as mentioned before. also a good indicator is to look at the brake fluid. if its yellow.... hasnt been maintained well... thats typically the first sign of neglegence.

I just changed the Brake fluid in both my bikes and used Motul RBF 600 Racing Brake Fluid. It's the most expensive brake fluid I have ever bought.. $20 for .5 liter at cycle gear.. and it is also the yellowest fluid I have ever seen. Can't rely on color.

Yea, I've always used yellow-ish fluid. First time seeing the more clear stuff, I thought I got the wrong stuff... and then there's blue and gold brake fluids by ATE. ^^
