I'd take the Honda over the Kawasaki purely on looks. But then it is blonde verse brunette kind of argument.
Having said that I saw a Z1000 last weekend with a 2bros can and it looked heaps better .........

After seeing them in person last weekend. I'm not sure which one I think looks better. That CB headlight. Not sure about that one. Everything else on the CB looks good, or good enough.
For sure, I'd get the CB. I have a very high loyalty towards Honda. As boring as they have been the past decade. One still can't beat their reliability.

It got me thinking; will this be a collectable CB in years to come? The first CB with a single sided swingarm (that I know off), LED lights, etc.

....dealership here in town is supposed to have them (well, 'it', since they only get one) either today or next week.

It seems that most, if not all, North America dealers are limited to 1. They are going to be a pretty rare bike this year, which means that there won't be much dealing to be done.

And here we are in New Zealand with 3 year old traded ones in dealers willing to talk turkey!
A fine bike but I think Honda is missing the boat states side. What's a model run 5 years maybe?

Not really up here. There's been no new stock since about February. Now of course the dealers think: "they can't get a new one at NZ$15K, so we can ask as close as possible to RRP for traded ones."
I find it a bit alarming that there are quite a few that have already been traded back or up for sale privately, after the price drop September last year. 6 months of ownership and already bored with it?

There was one on TM for 10k last week!
Bored? don't know. At 15 some would have been impulse buys, some possibly financial issues in the current environment. Always amazes me how quickly some people change bikes. I simply can't afford to!

The one for 10K (green one) was dropped.
I also just don't get people swapping cars or bikes after "5 minutes" of ownership. They must loose 1000's like that. At least give it a year to get some money back by using it, especially if you've bought it new.
I've heard the "bored" angle a few times. Even spoke to a guy that was selling his black Cb1R after a few months of ownership and going back to a R1.
The bike looks hot and attracts the sports bike type that wants a more upright position. They soon get bored of the power delivery and trade back to an R1, GSXR or similar.
It is basically a 919 in a pretty dress, the sports-boys soon discover that, stupidly, after signing on the dotted line.

Nice! I just called a large NW dealership to ask them when they were getting them and they said they had no idea, that due to the issues in Japan, it was taking longer than expected to get them shipped out.
Did you negotiate a price yet?

Man, I don't know if I can wait that long. They will be so hard to find, too.
I'm torn right now, because I hate paying for something off the lot, but there will literally be probably 5 of these in my entire state. I'd hate to miss an opportunity like this.

Got a call from the dealership this morning.
It's on the floor. Heading out on lunch to take a look at it.

I sat on one at lunch today. I still have mixed emotions about it. Seat hight seemed a little high and it felt small. This was right after getting off my 919. I will have to see if i can take a test drive to get a full opinion of the bike. It did look badazz and seemed to have improvements in most of the areas that the 919 was weak in. (ie. suspension).

Almost the same, I noticed the slimness immediately after sitting on it. The tank is much slimmer at the knees.
Dealership won't allow any rides on it; they say it's too risky as there are so few. I checked the odo and it only had 1.2 miles on it, so someone took it down the road and back. They are stating that there are only 500 in the US? I almost don't believe that, there has to be more than that.
They are asking $11,999 for it, which seems high, as MSRP was $10,999. But given the remote area I'm in, and the fact there may only be 3 or 4 in the entire state, they have a bargaining chip.
I was the first guy they called on it, and said they would give me a week or two to figure out the financing (selling my 919) or whatever if I was serious.
I was actually a little disappointed in some of the finish, however. The metal used on the rear foot pegs and shifter lever seemed very subpar. The shifter wasn't even chromed or anything, it look like matte magnesium or something. Very odd.
I also couldn't figure out if the seat popped off like the 919; it looked as if there was significant storage area underneath, but I could see no way into it. The passenger seat was definitely bolted down.
The SSS looked sweet, though, and I never noticed this before, but the brake rotor is almost in the dead center of the wheel, kinda cool. I had never thought about it, but I guess it had to go somewhere other than the outside!
I think it's a bit of a stretch for the price they are asking, especially since the 919 is close in performance. I agree the suspension is probably the biggest upgrade, plus the weight savings. It definitely felt lighter.
They were offering 1.9% financing, 0 down for 36 or 3.99% for 60.
On a second note, they had the CBR250R there as well. Wife just got her endorsement and I'd rather she start on something small and nimble before getting a bigger bike (contemplating giving her my 919 if I get the cb1r).
Overall, I was impressed. But it was more like going to a hyped up movie that you know was still good, but because of all the hype maybe you were expecting more?
Oh, and they wouldn't give jack squat on a trade on the 9er. Not after all the upgrades I did. Basically they said it's harder for them to sell it because they have to explain to potential buyers why it looks so different than stock (900 header, different wheels, etc.) so if I went that route, I'd have to go back to stock, and I just don't have the time.

Honda of Virginia Beach is not getting one and the salesman said that they were only importing 900 into the US.
Honda of Norfolk is getting one but it will not be in until the end of the month so said the salesman.
Casey Cycle City is hoping to get one soon.
Looks like if they are coming out here they haven't made it yet...

...just checked in with another dealer in eastern Idaho and they said it would be a couple of weeks.
But they also stated they aren't asking any more than MSRP for it. Said they don't like to screw folks over, lol.
...however, if you check the pic above, there is an RC51 just two behind the CB... hmmmm....

Hate to tell you, but paying MSRP is getting screwed.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't see $11K there. Add sales tax and insurance, you're looking at $12.5. For that kind of moola, it ought to be something really special. If I was disappointed in the finish or anything elce, I'd keep looking.
Too much other cool stuff out there to choose from.
they'll come way down `bout January.

don't take this the wrong way guys, i love my 9'er and have only owned honda street bikes. i like the cb1000r and i'm glad honda imported it to the us.
but....
looks wise, it resembles the z1000. except for the sss. herein lies my dilemma, buy a cb1000r because it's a honda or the z1000 with 10 hp more for $500 less or the ninja 1000 for the same price with the same 10 hp more(all hp #'s man.claims at the crank). the z1000 comes in 2 colors too.
do ya see where i'm going with this??? i'm kinda disapointed with honda lately. when the old man was alive, he wouldn't have taken a backseat to kawasaki.(i.e. freddie spencer two world championships in the same year, the v-4's, the cbr's the nsr, ect). i think honda m/c has lost touch(or gotten too big).

More like the Z1000 looks like the CB1000R. It was out first I believe, what, 2008 for the CB1000R and 2010 for the Z1000?
These will sell at retail simply because demand will be greater than supply. It might not be us buying them, but someone well. Lot's of people like to be different and a bike that will be rare this year is certainly different.

That really sums it up for me.
I'm thinking BMW or KTM or Ducati when we're talking that kinda coin.
I'd totally rock this Honda, but not at that price.
I hope its not destined to be another CB1000 ( which was overpriced when it came out and sold for only 2 years before being bounced.)
I think in general, there's going to be a tremendous dearth of used bikes from 2008-2010.

with the whole japan crisis thing i think there'll be about the same number of z's and cb's. and the cb is still $500 more for less hp's. that sss isn't worth $500 to me. from what i've read the z beat the cb in heads up comp.
but that's not the issue to me, as i'll more than likely be buying the ninja 1000.
so this is really a moot point to me.
the previous post was more about my disappointment with honda's lack of enthusiasm as of late.

Cracks me up reading all this talk about a old model!
Bloody nice bikes, I'd personally go the Honda over the Kawasaki - the Kawasaki just does not physically appeal. The Honda finish is excellent. RC in the background - old bike, heavy, slow and poor handling by todays super sports standards.
Side note - knowing how shit naked bike sales are in the USA I wonder if it will sit on the showroom and end up a $9999 bike by Christmas .........

I still want one. However, that new Ninja 1000 would not be a bad trade off either and I think I wouldn't have any buyers remorse over it. I am going to go down to the dealer tomorrow and see whats up.

Has anyone thought about the FZ-8? I went down to Berkeley Yamaha to check it out and I like the look, fit and finish. Not bad. They're asking 8,300

Good point. But if you are keen on one allow for the extra cost of suspension mods as they are a very 'economical' set-up with vast room for improvement.
Or buy a low mile 919 for half the price and call LDH for suspenders.........
