919 Throttle Cable Replacement

Looks like as part of repairing my bike after getting bodyslammed by a Dodge Durango I will need to replace the throttle cables or have them replaced. I know the clutch cable is easy, but how much of a pain is replacing the throttle cables on a 919?

I've haven't had to do it yet but I've read here that it's not pleasant, 2 to 3 hours if I remember correctly.

I did mine last year. Huge PITA! It took me about 5 hours. Two things you'll need, beer and some very long needle nosed pliers. I got a set that's about 16" long and they worked great. Make sure there are no young children around, they will learn some new words otherwise.

There must be a special tool or trick to it - the local dealer says they can do them both in an hour. Given my current battered condition, it sounds like that might be a good idea. Along with asking how they do it.

Never done it, but I am curious.
If you pop the tank and side panels, where does the difficulty come in?

Some are more difficult than others. My 700 requires you to dismount the carb rack, which means you have to remove the entire aft end of the bike.

I've replaced them before and it can be PITA. Get yourself curved niddle nose pliers with long handles, will make this job much much easier

Lifting the tank and removing the side panels doesn't help. Removing the air box would help a lot. Just twist your throttle and look for the end of the cables, then you'll understand. Its all done from the one side of the bike.

Boob, er, 'boog', lol, send me a PM with your email address.

It's an app you install on your computer, but we have a shared directory for motorcycle stuff that syncs to your computer. You just have to install it, then accept the invitation to join the shared folder (that I will send you).
