My VFR800 Resto

I literally just returned home from a 12 hour round trip from JC, TN to Colonial Heights, VA and back. I picked up a '98 Honda VFR800 that is in desperate need of TLC, but since it is a bike I've always wanted........I snagged it. This thread will be a long/gradual updated thread of bringing this bike back to life. Here a few pics to get it started:

My copilot for this 12 hour journey:

And some shots of the new ride........I have the seat (torn up pretty badly) and the lowers along with the front fender and front turn signals, they are just not mounted in the pics. I'm not even going to unload it till the morning as I'm so tired. Here you have it:

I'll be following along. Looks like you picked a good one. That thing needs some TLC in the worst way.

Nice copilot.

Cool mate. I always wanted to make one of those 'naked' - with the right treatment I think it could be a stunner.

Looks like a great base for your project.

What's on the clock?

When I bought my F3 I got it home and found the same thing. Dude had sprayed primer right over the top of the paint and decals.

Looks more fun than working on the porch.

There is a VFR800 bike here in Owensboro, KY that could be used to scavenge parts from. Word is the bike is complete, but the ECM is bad and the seller would take $500 for the whole thing.

PM me a link if you have one. I'd be interested in seeing what parts are in what shape.

I don't have a link. If you want, I can stop by there and take pictures and post them here. Let me know because I ride/drive past it just about every day.

LOL! Thanks bro! I had already decided these headers are at the "replace" status. Pretty neglected and rust falling out of everywhere. I picked up all new gaskets for the headers at Honda the other day........and they were in stock Now I just need to actually buy headers

Another little update...........I got a bit carried away and decided to go crazy with the bike just a bit.....so I removed the front end and the linked braking system along with pulling the engine covers to address the bad gasket work on the stator side along with fix the charging issue on the bike and pulled the clutch cover to clean the surfaces of the case and put a new gasket there as well just to avoid any possible oil misting issues due to the p/o not doing things correctly last time around. I drained the oil and radiator fluid to replace with new fluids (as you should always do when you buy a used bike). You should have seen the sludge that came out of the brake lines

Let her breathe!!!

Cleaning off the covers to repaint:

Please excuse my mess........LOL!

Why buy a bike you have to sink money into?

I ask this question to not stir the pot, but because it was asked to a Canuck who found a 1965 Harley Big Twin, and everyone said it was a turd, it was not worth crap, ect..... Then the question was asked Why would you buy something you have to sink money into?

I thought the header at the top of this Website USED to read it is not what you ride, it is that you ride but I see it has been removed, so I see it is now a bash Harley but buy a Honda and you are OK?

I hope you enjoy your bike, and wrenching on bikes is what I love to do, Harley's, Honda's, it does not matter, and I enjoy riding all of them!

I do not want to derail this thread, but I see all the support you are recieveing for buying a bike and restoring it, and a guy finds a NICE Classic Harley and he gets dogged out about why would he buy it.

Just saying.......................I guess it was apporpriate they took down the old banner at the top of the page. Sad.

This looks like a project that may be completed soon. It's a hell of allot of work to just get the parts clean. I don't own anything over a 1978 and I must say that your machine looks like a rocketship to me,radiators, computers and all that stuff add a whole new set of headaches to a rebuild I would guess. It's lookin good, keep up on the thread ,I would like to follow your progress.
