Saw this bike advertised on the local craigslist. I don't have any experience with Honda's sporting v-twins, only what I've read in reviews. Any one have one of these, or has ridden one, and can share their opinion?
I've got one. If I'm going backroad carving it's the bike I like to take. Fun machine, gobs of low end torque, and a pretty good suspension. Typically the front springs are a little soft, but not a problem until pushed pretty hard.
The cam chain tensioners were prone to failure on the older ones. That one is new enough it shouldn't be a problem.

What about your Hurricane when it comes to back road carving? The superchicken is a most enjoyable bike!
I had the same bike as in GeMs avitar. The price on that VTR is great with that few of miles, and especially with the upgrades it has. It's just a great bike. Like a big loveable hound. It's thirsty, but sheattttttt!!!! You won't care because you'll have a shiit eating grin on your face from the superb torque. You could be riding around at 80 and think you are in 6th when you find you are in 4th! It does like the wheelies. It is pretty damn smooth for a big twin.
The cam chain tensioners are a weak link but regular replacement at maybe 15 or 20 thousand mile intervals, or replacement with manual adjusters is well worth owning the bike.

Question: In what years was this bike produced?
Can anyone give me a definite first - last year of production?
I've seen 98-03 so far in my searches, is that it or were there a couple more years?
I'm gonna guess '05 is the cutoff, until I see other proof...
I clicked on the link for the '06 and it came up with a pic of an orange one but the specs below it list it as an '01.
Could be a misprint, but hard to tell which one is correct.

I'm not a fan of the blue, sorry Gotta have red. I gotta have $$ first, too.
I can cover the cost of one from savings... but another bike is not the intended purpose of said funds.
I'm scouting for an addition to the stable (someday), just looking for now.
sure is a comfy bike to ride halfway across the country on.... and it handles really well on those tasty north carolina curves.... and its gotta windshield *(a real one like mine has)
I owned mine for 20,000 miles. The bugaboos: Cam chain tensioner's ahve problems and one of mine let go. What a racket!!!!!!!! No permanent damage, though I was lucky. Cheap to fix. The big carbs....thirsty thirsty thirsty. You can eak a buck 25 between fillups.
The benefits far outweigh the foibles. What a motor. What a sound and an eye catching beast it is. Of all the bikes I've owned since '69, I miss this one the most. I could have gone anywhere with that bike. I'd have arrived with a schit eating grin on my gob each time. What more can I say. Like I said, the blue at 32 would be on my list if I had the cash in the fist.

Thanks for the input! much appreciated
I ride with the local Ducati crowd often. I LOVE the sound of the twins, but honestly the Ducs just aren't that comfortable for me (ergos punish my junk & hands) and with the dependability of my Honda, I'm not sure if I wanna take the plunge financially on an Italian bike - they seem to see a lot of shop time, even the new ones.
That said, I still love 'em
