Bike Too Heavy For Me ?

I think the 919 is too top heavy for me,I have owned it since april and have dropped it twice in garage,just leaned too far over and couldn't hold it up laid it down. no damage but had to get a friend to help me get it upright,full fuel tank both times. has more power than i need also,looking to downsize to lighter and less powerful bike. what can I ask for a proper sale. see my alblum for pics it now has 2400miles on it,stock except for givi shield and 1" risers. thanks for your input. Well, it's unfortunate to hear. How long have you been riding? No offense, but when I first started I dropped my GSXR multiple times in the garage (usually right when I come to a stop). Also how's the footing? You on your tippy toes?

Weighing at 165 lbs and my last bike being a Kawasaki Concours I find the 919 delightfully light So much so that I sometimes get careless with her. I've also owned a 78 Honda Cx500 and also a 72 CB750. The 919 is the only bike that I've ever "almost dropped" Once any of my other bikes started heading towards the ground I was F'ed. And I'm sure as heck aint getting stronger as I'm growing older either I'm not saying that you wouldnt enjoy a lighter bike, but I would make sure you are not on your tippy toes (check fit), and then I would start examining your habits.

As a side note. I almost dropped the 919 twice (while parking), right after I went to the single low exhaust. My excuse is that the weight reduction made such a difference that I wasn't ready for how fast the weight would shift, atleast that's what I told myself...

Hmmmmm. I consider it to be a relatively light bike. It is a lot lighter than many of the alternatives.

What were you doing with the bike? If walking it in the shed then you should have it slightly leaned towards yourself not away. Sorry but I cannot help think the issue may not be bike related.

Every time that I nearly dropped my 919 and previous bikes only once was it "not" my fault, and even then it was still my fault.

I'm going to guess you are grabbing the bars, and trying to use your back/shoulders to lift it? No wonder you needed help. Listen to the pro's when they tell you to lift from your knees.

Here's how

Using that method, someone like me (lets just say, bag of bones) can pick up a goldwing. Hell, someone smaller than me can. I can appreciate the fact that you're willing to admit that it's too much bike. But at the very least watch the video. It may save you from tweaking your back on whatever bike you get next.

there,s are a few different ways to pick up a bike...you should have no problems once you learn.....but damn dont tell anybody you needed help ..give it time your crazy to give up the 919

Am I the only one that holds up my 919 with my left hand by the grab bar while placing the rear stand under the swing arm with my right? And I'm a small guy. I was 140lbs when I first bought my 919 earlier in the year.....

The 919 is a heavy bike, but only when you're looking at other super sport bikes or much smaller bikes.

When I was about 13 or 14 I was pushing my friends HD Ultra Classic forward in the garage for him, he was working on it at the time. When I went to set it back down on the kick stand I found out that when pushing the bike forward I ended up pushing the kickstand out of place..... yeah that wasn't pretty. Thankfully I broke the bikes fall and he was able to pick it back up without any damage to either of us.

I believe those bikes weigh in at around 750-800LBS? maybe more?

Its all what your ust to... like you i have no problem balancing with one hand and im a not so muscular guy at 160lbs. But this is commin from a 22 yr old guy with 12 yrs of dirbiking, and a first street bike that was a 750LB vtx1800

The 919 will get heavy when it gets off balance, as any inline 4 or bigger cc street bike will. just gotta be prepared for it.

thanks for all the input,i have owned many bikes some dirt,some street,had a 1100 shadow before it actually weighed more but the weight seems so high up with full tank that just a little off upright and you can lose it pretty quick it seems, never dropped one just standing next to it moving it around,once it starts to go its a bitch to stop it,for me anyway,thanks again.

Shadow sits right on the ground, very low weight.

For the most part, if you tip any bike over far enough, it will become heavy. I think the best option is to not tip a bike over far enough to where it becomes a problem.

My 9'er is sooo easy to move around compared to my 75 cb750.....

The center of gravity is high-ish on the 9er but it's not going to be much different than any other standard. I'd stick with it unless you really want a cruiser style bike.

I am 5' 10" 200# and my last bike was a Bandit. (very top heavy) I test rode several bikes looking for that lightweight feeling and nimble road manners. All the other inline 4's were much more top heavy and required more pressure on the bars to make them turn. I found the balance of power and effortless handling in the 919.

I concur that you might find what your looking for in the SV650. The naked version that I rode was quite impressive. I did not expect it to have so much torque. It's no wonder so many of them are relegated to track duty. You might also give the Versys a try; effortless to maneuver but you might miss the grunt 'cause it just ain't there.

My driveway has a pretty good incline. When I work in the garage I roll the bike out in the drive. The 919 & SV are the only bikes that I can push in.

GSF500? Looks like it weights about 415 or so wet, and a lot less power. I thought about one of these for my first bike until I found a 599 (maybe look at one of those). I wouldn't go into the 250 range but that's just me, maybe that's all the power you want and you could really throw that around easily.

2G FZ1 is fatter than the 919 as well.

SV650 would be good, it's lighter and skinnier between the legs.

It's all relative. I trade off between the 919 and the ST1300. The 919 feels like a toy in comparison after I get off the ST. The weight and top heavy feeling disappears from the ST as I get underway and pick up some speed. I had an 81' GL1100 Interstate before these two.

boogun, buying in the spring is the worst time to buy a motorcycle, thats when prices jump up high and then start climbing from there. best time to buy is typically jan-march as that's when people start buying new bikes and need to get rid of old ones. same for the dealers.

Unless you've owned a 1st generation Kawa Concours with tank bag and full (7 1/2 gals) of gas, then you're just yakking about a Top Heavy Bike! And yes, the handlebars will go grip deep in the dirt!

If you are walking the bike around lean it into you a bit, if it tips it is coming your way not the opposite direction. You can wheel a bussa or bigger easily this way.

If it is falling away from you when you are wheeling it around YOU are doing it wrong and a change to a lighter bike will not help the underlying problem.

you probably correct,both times it fell away from me,I have it in storage garage and entrance has two lips 3' and 4" about 6" apart b4 you hit the tar,thats where I lost it each time,balance issue for sure. also I am not flat footed on it but not on tip toes either,never have a problem while on the bike just when pushing it around,but at 67yrs you don't have the strength,you once had.
