Ultrasonic cleaner
Hey All. Just picked up a 1971 CB350... okay, I bought it because it was my first bike, like literally, MY bike, but anyway, it's sat for a few years and is a bit gummed up. Does anyone on here know how to make a proper Ultrasonic cleaner on the cheap? I've seen little toy ones on ebay that won't hold an entire carburetor, and some gigantic ones for like $500 that you could probably do the entire engine. I'm looking for a carb sized one. Electronics and acoustics experts, chime in. This could be huge for those of us on the forum with carb'd bikes or neat freaks.

All of the above.
do you know the approximate capacity you would need to submerge the parts you want to clean?
edit: or do you have approximate dimensions of your parts?
Also, I use an ultrasonic cleaner all the time, and I have had a fair amount of success without having to submerge the entire object at once.

Okay, cleaner first...
Something like that. Carb sized. And I know i could buy one, but I just paid off my CC and am trying not to spend like a drunken sailor. Which is why I'd never be elected to public office....
Now, for the bike...
Thar she is. Beautiful thing. I loved that bike and now shes back in my garage where she belongs. Fills the vacancy left by my beloved CB750... tear...

nice bike! that'll be fun!
mrhonda, if you're unsure about the ultrasonic cleaner, a great, cheap neat trick is to strip the carbs down to just the bare bones and then put it into a pan of boiling water for 10-12 minutes. you'd be surprised at how well that cleans out the carbs!

Then be sure to use the pan for making caramel apples afterwards.

Well, Caramel and Varnish are pretty related, aren't they? I'll need to try out the boiling method. Thanks everyone!

There are carb cleaners that come with little parts baskets inside.
You just put your parts in and dip them, following the instructions to the word.
What do you guys think pro's use?
Keep in mind that if you think outside the instructions, your parts may indeed go into solution if you want to think that you might be smarter than the chemists who came up with the stuff.

I know one shop that used carb cleaner in a ultasonic machine, and they flat loved it.
Not recommended though, lots could go wrong, I'm sure.
One of those Harbor Freight jobbers has been on my mind for a while, never thought about using it for the handguns, might of sealed the deal!
