sneak peek at my 1100XX conversion

I just started this afternoon with empty case and head. I think it's going to be easier than I thought. I can't wait to throw all that torque to the track in my lightweight RR frame.

I had to make a spacer for lower rear mount before adjuster would lock motor in frame. If I can tomorrow, I'll try and get spacer in there and lock motor so it won't move if I remove wood from underneath. I need to get it off the stand to make sure oil pan is lined up with floor (or close anyways). Then I can proceed with it.

Whaddaya mean "IF" I've already sold almost all of my 900 performance stuff. It's this setup or no racing for me (and that just isn't an option). It'll get done one way or another. Stay tuned.

Ever stand on the rear tire while hanging onto the grab rail? Then start going at it with your exhaust?

Me neither...

I can't wait to see it, I accually wanted to get a XX peel the plastics off slap some protapers on it and a shorter swing arm. I had a 2002 and that motor is so smooth you don't realize how much power you're putting down. Loved the motor, liked the bike but it felt a little long and a touch too heavy and I'm about 40lbs heavy so that's like another person...(Chica) but man I sure did love that power plant!

Get it together man!

Thanks for that info Brian. I was wondering how the power was on stock BB motor. And yes BB's are long. That's why stock airbox wouldn't go on my project (RR frame is MUCH shorter). I made last 2 motor mounts at work tonight and will install tomorrow. That should complete mounting it. wiring, cooling, resizing my FCR's, and she's ready to kick butt.

Are you going to leave the balancers in? Turbo?

The XX engine is incredible, it's no Busa, but she's plenty mean.

I have an 02 with a shift kit, PCIII, and an Akra Sport pipe. Really woke up the stock engine.

I'm lucky enough to have a Bird guru for a best friend. His was 1195 with 2mil stroke, head, cams, sidewinder, NOS (2 stages). It was a beast! He bought a turbo last year and is totally redoing it (AMA Prostreet). Turbo is 500 horse capable. Anyways..for starters, he is helping me remove balancers. I'm going to stick 1195 kit in it, Dyna 2000 and that's probably it. I've been inside an RR engine so many times I've lost track (been wrenching for couple decades now). I'm kinda excited to work on something new. As for Busas...That's why I love 1/8th mile dragracing. Catch a good light, lay a good 60ft and even modded Busas couldn't run down my 945 RR even on motor. They are really gonna have hell with this thing

Who's your buddy? I'm pretty close with three or four Bird drag racers and a bunch of other guys with turbo Birds.

I love the Busa's engine design with the cylinders separated from the upper case but the bikes are so damn ugly.

His real name is James Simmons. He mainly hangs out at Psychobike.com, his username is dragracer08. If you know him, DO NOT even mention that I said anything about that turbo build. He wants it totally on the down low and would be very upset at me for mentioning it.

You've mentioned his name, blackbird, 1100xx, turbo, and drag racing all in the same thread. If anybody hits google looking, they will find this information.

Just sayin'...

I don't think he would mind much. I've heard him mention to other people about his "build" on psychobike so I'm probably in the clear.

Mumms the word........ I hang over on Psychobike occasionally and know Dean Pipes (EliXXir) as well as a few other force-fed XX owners. Fun stuff.

Thanks brutha, you should ride it!

It's got Carrozerria forged wheels and carbon fiber rotor carriers so up front she weighs nothing!

Mock engine is mounted. Dang that was easy! I'm going to run stock RR radiator without fan. It's drag only so fan shouldn't be an issue. If it does need it, I have an idea for that, too. Anyways, that's the progress for now. I primarily babysit my now 6 month old while wife sleeps on weekends. I'll be back out there this week with more progress. I made mounts out of steel but will get them made at machine shop out of aluminum for final mount. It's a little close on the sides, but not bad. Also, the brace between the frame rails will have to be cut out to clear FCR's I'm mounting on it. I got a buddy with a turbo RR that has his cut and he has no frame problems so I should be good.

Mock motor out and real one in and bolted up. Bolted up oil cooler and got it where I want it. Next step is to remove motor and wait til I can get piston kit for it (also remove balancers while it's down).

Instead of cutting the brace, I rotated engine back a few more degrees. That will give me more room for radiator and carbs. I was going to modify the FCR's from my 900 but found out nobody sells throttle shafts for them anymore. So...looks like I'm forking over 1249 bucks for a new set for the XX motor. Also trying to get 1195 kit for it so when I split the cases to remove the balancers I can install the kit at same time. Worst case scenario, I'll have to race it stock bore for a while. Even stock, it should still be plenty potent.

Damn, new carbies? Have you checked Fleabay for a set?

How about searching over at CBR1100XX.org? Want me to ask around?

I check ebay regularly. And yeah, ask around please! They would have to be in mint showroom condition (I'm leary of buying used carbs, especially FCR's). I found a set but had some slight damage and were overpriced (in my opinion). Also keep yer ear to the ground for used 1195 kit also.

FI and megasquirt

Why dont you find a set of CBR1100xx injection bodies and FI it using the megasquirt box?
much more control than carbs and most of the stuff is available as its was FI on newer models

I started as a complete newbie and gained from 102-130 rwHP abd 89-112Nm in torque and a Lunatic Roll-On action from tickover - doing it on an aircooled FJ1200 - with absolutely NO bolton parts

just my idea of going another (expensive) set of Carbs

Lars

I honestly considered that at the start. I'd have to run airbox with the FI and there is VERY limited space under the tank. (would pretty much have to make airbox from scratch). Another reason is I just can't give up my flatslides. I doubt I'm giving up any hp to FI with them (stock CV carbs I'd agree with you). As for control, they are hard to beat as well. Every aspect of them is adjustable (which makes them such a pain in the ass to tune). I do appreciate the opinions however, keep them coming.
