On my old niner, I have a bit of sludge accumulating under the front sprocket cover, and if I'm not totally imagining things, there's a bit of a whine under load. Bike has 15kish of miles and its the original chain, etc. I'm religious about lubing the chain, but haven't really cleaned it in 2-3k.
Soooo, is the noise anything to be concerned about? Would the sludge be from anything besides chain lube? PJ-1 Blue, by the by. Thanks, gents!
It is probably the chain lube. Clean it up and watch it. Also, the whine might be "in your imagination" per se, after finding the build-up. So, just listen to see if it changes and keep that area clean.

+1 Thats sound advice
I'm gonna give my bike a bath tomorrow, I think I'll make a morning of it and clean the chain and de-goop the front sprocket too...thanks for the inspiration you guys!

Well, fire the engines! Spur this iron space-pony on!
In the fall I always take off the sprocket cover and get out the kerosine and parts brush. It's a very messy job, but it keeps the build up in check. There's nothing wrong with your bike.
You'd be surprised how fast the wheels kick up grit and dust whick clings to the chain. Then when the chain wraps around the small sprocket, it can't hold on and gets slung against the cover. It starts acumalating and you have a nice mess. The whine? Possible it's the chain too loose and rubbing on the chain guides constantly.
I cleaned, lubed, and adjusted my chain yesterday afternoon. I think I'm finally going to replace the chain and sprockets this year. I'm the second owner and as far as I know it could still be the original chain and sprockets with 26,xxx miles on them. Or, at the very least they have over 10,000 miles on them. As I've stated on here before, I can pull straight back on the chain and it is barely starting to reveal the low points of the sprocket.
Oh,well, I cleaned mine the other day. The chain started getting real dirty. The hose had slipped off my lobeman and I was oiling my rim. I picked up some noise, from stiff links. Went back again today and re-cleaned and oiled heavy and the noise was still there. Took it all down to check front, cause the rear looked new. Wow, the 17t was wore out on the inside. I ordered another DID and sprockets. I can't complain, I got 35,000 miles out of the original setup. I changed to the 17t a few days after I bought the bike, and put the Loobeman oiler at about 1,500 miles.
Murph, I've been looking for a reason to buy a chain tool. Feel like doin some guinea piggin? I've done em before without the chain tool.
Obermeyers used to have gold DID chains very reasonable.
Rod,
I'll definitely let you know when I get ready to order the chain and sprockets. Sprocket Center (I think) had the best combo pricing when I started looking a few months ago, but I'll check out Obermeyers too.
