No need to cut it up -- once the bottom out cushion seat is tapped out of the shock body the rod bushing / seal carrier can be removed by pushing it down into the shock tube far enough to clear the retaining ring, carefully removing the ring, and slide hammer the lower eye / shock rod / damper assy out. Obviously the shock must be depressurized before doing this unless you want the flying pieces embedded in your forehead.
I'm willing to bet there isn't anything other than the drilling for the flex hose inside the shock, but never having had one apart before ...
Do you have any experience with shocks? I'm just asking because arranging the damper disc springs is a bit of a black art, and the probability of getting it close enough to right on the first try without a lot of experience is pretty low.
