FML I quit. Dads coming down Monday to help me fix it... I am so pissed. Not only is it going to be the best weather week of the year for riding its labor day weekend and all of my roomate's are going home. FML
do you reset the wrench to zero when done with it?

Exactly what I was going to say.
I recently (last weekend) had to rebuild a car motor and one of the head bolts stripped taking it apart. I had to drill it out. Grade 10 bolts are tough. I feel your pain.

well heres where i make myself sound like an idiot... on my torque wrench one click = one lb. But the lowest mark on the wrench is 25lbs. Well I figured if one click is one lb and i click 18 clicks back from 25 I should be able to tighten to 7ftlbs... So when i said the Wrench didnt work what I really meant was I am an idiot and should have just gone to auto zone and borrowed a low torque wrench. Now I am going to have to pay for it. Any hints on getting it out?
D@mn dude... Sorry to hear that... Where is JMU? Is that where the bike is? None of the WT boys are close enough to help?
Harrisonburg, Closest guys that i know about are VA beach and manassas. Dads closer than either of those places and i have to wait for the new bolt anyways.
It could work out to be a good thing though I suppose. I will get to spend some time with my dad.

go to auto zone and get an appropriate sized e-z out. don't be fooled by the name its not always that e-z.

Balls... It is cool that you can spend some time with your dad. Mine, FXS, came down last week with the BMW. He got it in the driveway and the effing ignition switch went bad! The bike was down the whole time he was here, but we still had a good time. Good luck with the repair!

unless you put locktite on it you may be able to coax it out with the point of a scribe. As long as it was not cross threaded I've had great luck easing them out this way, from 1.3mm screws in cameras on up to bridge bolts ( last part a pun, just like saying bridge bolt ).
FWIW: Using a torque wrench on anything bike related other than specific internals ie: head bolts, crankshaft main bearings, connecting rods to name a few, will get you into serious trouble. Sorry you had to find out the hard way.

You can try an ez out but that doesn't always work (most of the time it will). If it doesn't you'll need to drill it out and put a helicoil in. Try to avoid that because it's hard to drill straight into a steel bolt encased in aluminum. Don't ask me how I know.....

He's not kidding. I once broke the bolt off on the doggone thermostat housing on my little Chevy Sprint. I ended up doing just that. Luckily I was at work, so I had all my tools (including air drill) - I did have to catch a ride to the parts store for the helicoil though. Just be careful and you can get it out.
So what's the status of your situation? You can also try gently tapping counter clockwise on the stub with a small center punch. I've also been able to massage some out with one of those aggravating vibrating engravers, wear ear plugs or muffs when you do that as you might want to do something violent from the noise.
Bike is back together and runs like a top once again. Sorry no pictures... I was in a hurry to get it done as quick as possible. We had to squeeze it in between two classes and three chapters of reading for my Sex Offenders class. By the way its interesting to read about so many of you in my school books...
Did the state make you take that sex offender class???
Or did you figure out how to be an offender on your own?
Haha no its a college class. Counts for a Justice Studies Elective. Goes through everything having to do with Sex offenses. How Bartons brain works, how Barton plans things, how Barton grooms his victims, how Barton will be punished. It really is pretty interesting, and scary at the same time.

For all those who use helicoils check into threadserts much better design. I actually use them in the quads to give me a stronger thread so i can use stronger bolts instead of using larger ones that cause machine work to have to be down to many of the parts to fit together.
They are a solid thread instead of a coil of wire. and can be stacked for longer threads.

Common sense. So rare it's a god damn super power.
We pulled the pairs, plugs, radiator hoses and lifted the tank, took off the top cover, and drilled in and pulled the bolt right out no big deal. We made sure to wrap around the drill with a cloth so that all the metal shards were contained in the cloth. Then we ran a magnet to make sure we got it all. i will ride the bike tomorrow for a few miles then change the oil. I am also calling tomorrow morning and trying to get my bike in on the dyno for this friday evening. Time to get the A-F ratio right once and for all. I am tired of black crap on my license plate. Then the weekend after that its VA Beach to party! Cant wait.

How do you figure that?
After having a $6000 mod to my collar bone (4 inch titanium plate and 7 screws) becuase i didn't tighten my bicycle wheel down tight enough.
I use a torque wrench on EVERYTHING!
Yes always release the spring pressure when your done, and no, don't drop it.
For a click wrench make sure you get the Click in one solid movement. If you are in a tight space don't try and use it as a ratchet with a couple movements that won't give the proper response.
For the really careful folks look for a break over wrench, that's one that releases when you get the set torque so you can't over do it if you lean a bit too far.
And yes back to zero after use and all the other good advice already noted.
hm harbor freight 1/4in and half in torque wrenches have never failed me *kocks on wood* never over tightened anything w/ em. always loosen em up completely before i put em away.

What really gets people into a jam is oversized click type wrenches stored for months at full scale.
Few realize that:
1 Click types need to be backed off when not in use.
2 Have half the accuracy of a dial type.
3 Are useless below 20% of full scale if accuracy is needed.
4 Are precision instruments that have to be carefully handled and cared for, no drops from 4 ft on to concrete, no laying in dirt between fastener torquing, etc.

True, but slamming one into the concrete with all that you're worth sure feels like sweet relief after you accidentally over-torque a bold, snapping the head off like it was a head off a dandelion.
5 Torque wrenches come in different scales of measurements.
(some bolts, like the ones holding the springs in on my clutch plate, require inch-lbs of torque... my torque wrench only measure in foot-lbs... which I didn't realize at the time I set the number increment )
When you back off the torque wrench, always set it to the LOWEST setting on the wrench, do not back it all the way off, after seeing the PMEL shop do all the calibration work on our wrenches when I was in the Air Force, they stressed that the wrenches get returned to the lowest setting, not backed all the way off. It keeps the internals happy and last a Loong time.
And yes Shadow you are correct.

Here is something to consider. Never torque a hot fastener! Never! You are just begging to strip the host threads. I know. I dun lernt it the hard way.
