Speaking of wheelies...
The first part of this thread talks about the rev limiter, the second part is one of the funnier on-line arguments I have seen.
Did my valves, antifreeze, plugs, and oil&filter, yesterday.
Mileage was 24,650. Every valve was spot on. Inside of valve cover was clean as a dinner table. Also opened every plug connector, and fuse, I could reach, and dabbed on some electrical grease.
When I worked at Case/IH,
the slogan was, "fresh oil and grease goes along way towards a happy custumer!"
I still believe my bike was made on a Wednesday at the factory. I have had absolutaly no problems of daily riding. Still have 2 months before Lil Red's 2nd birthday. Should have 28-30 thou by then.
Sokali, this is excellent work you have done. Be it someone reasonably experienced or someone expanding their boundriesthe first time, you work makes for a great easy and complete guide. When I do mine, it'll be much easier than it would've been. Not only that, I would have had mine all buttoned back together and then said, uh oh, I should have changed the plugs too !
Mike: Thanks for taking the time to document this How-To.
When the first 4 cylinder CB750 Honda came out in 1969 everyone complained what a PIA the valve adjustment was going to be. In the time it took to read this thread I could have checked and adjusted the valve lash on one of those old 750's.

You yes, but not me, and I'll attribute it to being a speed reader and not admit my wrench speed.
who was the last person to do the valve adjustment with the shim kit? who has the shim kit??
i just turned 16k miles and called the dealer, they want $275... i dont have a garage or that much technical knowledge regarding cams/valves etc so i'm considering just forking the $$ over.
I always get PM'd about this---READ THE ENTIRE THREAD---I DO NOT HAVE THE SHIM KIT!!!
This is one of the coolest threads possible--I forwarded the shims as soon as i could--hey, I did not even email MY COUSINS during the big relocation of 2010!!--trust me!---for the love of God, I did not violate the WT code!!!!!!

Also when I had the shim kit, there were only 6 or 8 shims in it and some were the same size, so even if you can find it there's a good chance, it may not have the size you need anyway.
Also if anyone is interested you can have your very own kit with 3 of every size:
I thought about buying a shim kit, but I have 3 bikes now and the 919 doesn't get the loving (mileage) it used to. So I might just buy the three shims @ $5 each and offer up the others to the kit if it is ever found!
+1, I am probably going to be checking my valve clearance later this year and was wondering that same thing.
I changed #2 & #3 Intake Shims at 32K. No pics though as I was too damn oily to worry about a camera. Really wasn't that hard, I just had to remove the cam shaft on the intake side.
Only 6000 miles on my '07 but I did check and adjust the valves on my '06KLR650. Basically the same proceedure from what I read so far. Glad I practiced on the KLR first. At 6000 miles on that bike I needed to adjust all four shims...Someone also took the time to do a great write up like this one. Great accompanyment to the manual.
Remember to get 2 crush washers for the fuel supply line if you took off the tank. And a pulser cover gasket if you have the Circuit 1 cover
I know it should be "common knowledge" but the Circuit 1 cover bit...should be at the top of this. As in "order this first dummy, or else you'll be waiting days to ride again."
Though I'll likely cheat and ride with a recycled gasket.

Thanks.
The KLR tends to hold it's clearances after that first bedding in. You can probably pretty much forget about it for at least 15-20K miles now that you've done the first one.
question is do you need the shims? and lots of moto shops will do a swap of shims for either free or cheap (like 5 bucks a shim), dont talk to the parts guys... talk to the service guys.

save your money.....i know people who have 80 90 100 thousand and more on there metric bikes...i know of know one who had valves out of spec....they dont even check them any more .... big money maker for the dealer looking for suckers....and i know your no sucker
