Walkie Talkie into Comm?

My buddy and I were brainstorming ways to come up with a cheap motorcycle communications system. Neither of us want to drop 200+ on a retail kit.

So what we got to thinking is taking a simple walkie talkie apart. Somehow removing the speaker / listener part and wiring it up into our helmet and somehow keeping it in place up there (duct tape). Then use a bar mount or whatever else to have the talkie button available to push to talk shit to the other guy.

We were drinking a bit too much perhaps, but we thought it would be an awesome and CHEAP idea (we're both in college and piss poor). Do any of you smarter / know-how guys think this would work? My buddy is good with wiring and electronics and I'm good at sitting back at watching, so I don't think it should be too terribly difficult to accomplish.

Any ideas? Hints? Tips? Thoughts? Snide remarks?

Well, I can't comment on your walkie talkie idea. But you can split the g4 power set kit for about $150 each. A little cheaper than 200+. Just check online. I bought my kit for $300. (the power set comes with 2 set ups). You won't be disappointed.

+1, I bought my G4's last January on sale for $140 each and with a new model coming they might get even cheaper this(next) year. The walkie idea is feasible but you'd be better off with a truly hands free setup, much safer.

That is so ironic, my buddy and I were trying to figure that out too. If you already own the walkie talkies, just go on ebay and buy a motorcycle push to talk headset for your brand walkie talkie.

I bought mine on amazon.

Amazon.com: GSI Super Quality Two-Way Radio Headset Kit for Half-Face Motorcycle Helmets - Noise Cancellation In-Helmet Dual-Sided Earphones with Boom Microphone - Handlebar PTT (Push-To-Talk) Control Button - Compatible with Motorola, Icom, Uniden,

Didn't try them on the road, but the kids had fun with headset installed in the helmets.
