Bicycle rack on back?

Hello to all, happy holidays!

So some of my more adventurous friends and I have been thinking of taking a ride out west this spring to do some serious mountain biking, hiking, and all that good shit. We were thinking Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, anywhere out west really, all is beautiful country. We are also cheap. We do not want to rent bikes to do the trails. We want to haul ours with us. Which brings me to the point of this thread.

Is there any (safe, reasonably priced, do it myself) way of hauling my mountain bike on the back of my 9er? I need a winter project, and this would fit the bill.

I know you guys know all there is to know, so I would appreciate the transfer of knowledge.
