Whipped up a carbon fiber windscreen

I decided to turn my OEM windscreen into a carbon fiber version, just for fun:

Step 1: wax up the inside of the acrylic windscreen (use lots of wax!)

Step 2: Prepare the carbon plies (four plies of twill for this one)

Step 3: Apply the four plies with a 0-90-0-90 schedule (a symmetric schedule such as 0-90-90-0 is more conventional for structural parts, but it's a windscreen...)

Step 4: Trim edges, and compare to the original:

There were some imperfections in the outer surface, so leaving it bare carbon wasn't going to work. I did a bit of filling, then blacked it out - I really like the look:

and

The finished windscreen weighs 165 grams, whereas the OEM windscreen weighs 295 grams.

Oh, and I also changed the fork oil today. Thank you to those who posted up instructions for how to do that.

Next, a touch of powder coating (easy stuff), then custom rearsets, and after that, add a set of Tuono mirrors, and then to get rid of the stock turn signals...

Well, hmm. It takes a while to do, and carbon is pricey. Off the top of my head, it would probably be something like $150.00 each. A group buy might get the price down a bit.

We need more steps on the process... did you use the OEM shield as a template? I thought that some sort of epoxy needed to be used?

Looks sweet!

Well OK.

The layup that you see in step 3 is layed up on the back side of the OEM windscreen that was waxed up in step 1. I used Proset epoxy for each ply, applied with a chip brush and then smoothed/reduced with a squeegee (like a body filler spreader).

After curing overnight, I trimmed the part down to the OEM shape using a disk sander, various air-powered tools, and good old fashioned elbow grease.

Gel coat the front of the next ones you make and youre in business! Its a shame not to use/see the CF weave after the trouble and cost you went through to use carbon fiber.

I made this from scraps as a weekend project, no big deal. I'd also need a proper mold to get rid of the few pits I had in the finish near the edges. Personally, I'm not a fan of gel-coated parts - but yeah, having the weave show is cool.
