Angry LIDAR

Cali's coffers are being buoyed by tickets from CHP's LIDAR. I'm putting cruise control in my cage and going slow to keep a clean record.

RIP Speed

They are here in Santa Barbara. I wonder what the wavelength and output frequency of those bad boys are. I bet I could whip up a sweeper pretty easy. Just modulate a cw laser.

I wonder how may tickets will get mail to the police station? You know they will just get thrown in the trash.

Bigdaa, you are dreamin!

When the detector lights for 1/2s, find a wide shoulder to make a Cali donation, and 4x that to your insurance.

cmurphy84, Nope, they are handheld transceivers with personal face-time. Hopefully very expensive, so other states don't follow.

I've been working with solid state laser systems off and on for 25 years. 1/2 second in electronics is an eternity my friend.

Over on our local forum we've got an anonymous "ask an officer" section. If you jam LIDAR with your own invention or one of the off he shelf systems (and they do jam the signal) they're wise to that up here and will pull you over and start taking things apart if they lase you and get repeated error messages; the charge is usually obstruction.

Time for a great story? Sure, why not. Last weekend I was driving the back roads over to the Rockies for a bicycle race. In the truck with bikes and tents and all. Now I have an Escort STI in the truck and tend to travel on the plus side of the limit but not crazy fast & I move over out of the fast lanes.

Coming up the high pass there's construction and it's Friday evening so there's plenty of traffic and it all concertinas up at the re-paving. We get out of the zone and you're basically on a conveyor belt at that point, 2 lane road with some passing zones and some 3 lane chunks. In my mirror I can see a guy in a Neon racing for position and I've ranted about that before, the guys who run into incoming traffic to gain a car length while meanwhile there are 2 RVs and a couple Semis setting the pace.

So the guy int he Neon cuts right in behind me pretty well right under my tailgate, I consider letting him buy me a new bumper but don't want the hassle, the next minute he's undertaking me through a chainup pullout and giving me a fuck you look for slowing him down. I wave back and a klick later we hit a passing zone and things thin out, next is a big wide open down the pass stretch, posted way low because it snows up,and is clogged with big trucks that love tipping over. At that point the box is squawking KA so I ease it off and see about a mile or so down the road the red & blues peel out of a side road and I start crossing my fingers they're giving my new friend a talking too.

No dice, a big old Ram pickup with Alberta plates so right brand but wrong guy, I carry on cursing that there's never a cop around when you need one when I get flashed by a semi coming the other way. I know what that means so I keep things backed off and a minute or two later there is a another grid road cop with the Neon aside, the driver's entire body was bright red, and he was hunched over the wheel like kid having a tantrum. Put a smile on my face for 2 days!

As for LIDAR, as with any radar the best defense is to no be the first rabbit over the hill. Keep your detector on, and pick the right places to dial on the gas.

I think that down here, there are laws against jamming RADAR, but.......there is no law against jamming LIDAR. That's at least from my database as of a couple years ago.

What would be a kick in the pants would be to collimate the beam and combine it like the LIDAR does with a rifle type scope aperture. Remaining undercover, everytime he goes to zap, flip it on and mess things up. I know, juvenile, juvenile, juvenile. Forgive me, Law-Guys. Just dreamin.

If a long time means a couple years then I guess so.

that is funny but maybe hiding opposite the fishing hole and lining up on them with funny box with a rifle scope is verging on the unsafe for yourself. You only just go back on here!

I know its illegal around here to mess with any police/first responder technology. There was a story going around about how a simple device can capture the signal sent to traffic lights to make them change for police. I so want one of those. Especially when sitting on the bike in 95+ degree 85+% humidity weather stuck at a light that won't change.

I've resorted to running a few red lights after the anti-freeze overflow starts dripping on the ground. Called the local police department, and they didn't seem to care. Their only advice was call the municipality that is in charge or lights and/or make right turns.

Bigdaa is right, 1/2s is nearly forever in electronics, and add to that my V1 gives me a laser alert from over a mile away when the cop hits the folks in front of me... even around corners (but with laser NOT over hills, Ka radar will usually trigger over a hill, but laser won't...). And also like Danke said, just let someone else go a little faster than you, a goodly distance ahead of you. Then just keep on your toes.

The funny part is, I don't speed any more... just learned all my bad habits when I was young and reckless and now I just cruise along with the cruise control set 1MPH over the limit (which is 1MPH below according to the GPS - I guess my truck speedo reads 2MPH fast). I can't afford to get a ticket, even just the chance of getting one is too much for me.

use lazer jammer, they are not illegal except in 9 states. Oh wait, Cali is one of them

FCC does control radio signals, therefore radar jammers are illegal by fed law.
Howerer, laser signal is not under FCC regulations, it's actually under FDA and as far as FDA concerned, jamming is not illegal.

There are only 9 states which have a statue against jamming laser signal:
CA, UT, CO, OK, MN, IL, TN, VA, SC.

Again, I wouldn't speed and take my chances, cheaper that way

Once they've successfully brainwashed the public at large that any speed above a magic number means that you'll instantly crash in a twisted ball of metal and flames, leaving a trail of destruction behind you, they’ll start filling the coffers justified with safety. In Australia, particularly the state of Victoria, has this down to a fine art with cops camo-ing themselves up hiding in tress, etc. and only allowing a 3km/h (1.9mph) tolerance.
They even budget for this revenue, to the tune of AU$437 million this year, for a population of 5.5 million.:

Top cop was pressured to ignore faulty speed cameras to protect revenue | Herald Sun

We in NZ aren’t far behind this sort of bullshit. They have been using laser here for years.

Probably not because he already has raspberry jelly from his morning donuts all over him.

Dad and an uncle were telling me stories of 'the good ol' days' when a cop would pull you over for speeding 10+ MPH over and just give your vehicle the once-over test and be done. Kick the tires, bumpers, check your license and plates, give you a little chewin' and let you go on your way.

States will deny it all day long, but speed limits are lower than they need to be and traffic tickets have little or no impact on how people drive. I speed EVERYWHERE I go, drive about 20,000 miles per year and average about one ticket every 3 or so years. I don't mind paying $200 every few years to drive the way I want. It's annoying, but the price I am willing to pay.

Heck, the way it works around here, you can go to traffic school once a year and when you do, you don't get points on your license so you insurance will not go up.

Yes, the good old, days where they gave you a sporting chance, using the double gatso lines. A long straight with a tree at the end, you know to slow down. If you didn't, fair game. Those were the days when cops were cops and were allowed to use common sense and discretion. Now the ones that work traffic are nothing more than glorified meter maids / revenue collectors.

I had a fine encounter woth Oro valleys finest the other day, I pinned 1st gear and coasted just a bit through 2nd so I'm a bit over 60mph in a 50, he pulled me over, and we had meet before, He got me once in my car because I had just moved to the state and still had fla tags and another time because I had a temp tag that wasn't mounted properly on the bike. But any way, he pulls up and recognizes me and my bike, lets me know he doesn't really care if I'm doing 5-10 over just to not be a jack ass about it and draw attention to myself... It also helps my cause that he rides a 05' 919. Little slap on the wrist and off I go.

Given the opportunity, if they thought you had a laser jammer I'm sure they'd use whatever statute was currently on the books regarding radar jamming, charge you with it and see if it sticks leaving it up to you to fight it.

Around here I can go 79mph on the interstate, 5-8mph over the posted limit on any local road, or 10 over on the highway without hassle so that's what I stick to unless I'm out blasting back roads.

I'd love to have an old fashioned car with no electronics in it equipped with a low-powered EMP device and go fry those suckers. That would be sweet.

Thanks Danke for the great story!

The no cover, brief warning is not enough time to avoid a lock without jelly.

My last lock was from a ST1300 parked in an overpass shade from his vibrating seat...not far!

The amber alert boards advise 911 to report DUIs. So hopefully they will focus on making the roads safer.
