what i would spend on a bike is what i can afford....vmav for 20.000 is well worth it,,, if 20,000 was a drop in the bucket.or if i was single ...that being said after owning a 919 i realize i dont need big or fast to satisfy my need to ride and have fun..

I agree the prices are more then a small car these days. You can get a Honda fit for the same price and a Diavel? Fucking crazy. And BMW?????? 20K for a bikes who's rear spline drive connecting the axel to the shaft is going to wear out, with out extensive lubercation every 1500mi, after 30K is stupid as well. Harley Sporters are priced to sell but nothing in their "Higher" range of models.

Yep - I agree that it is all relevant to your personal financial situation. Me the 9er brand new was a excellent bike for a very good price, if my $ situation had been more affluent I may well have been riding a S4R Ducati or a Speed Triple.
VMax - limited production run etc (for a Yamaha)- me I'd not pay it as I don't like the 'look'.
Harleys and big bore cruisers - in the States this really should be the more economical bike to purchase as your sales figures prove the cruiser is something like 70% of bike sales so logically the economies of high volume build should be able to dictate a more reasonable resale. But that does not allow for corporate greed, shareholders etc.
I've a friend who buys a new bike every 2 years - he'll think nothing of dropping 20k on one and losing 10 ish on the trade of the outgoing bike!
Pre GEC there were plenty of trendy Americans happy to fork out 70-90k on a Jessie James chopper!
My next new bike will not be expensive - it will most likely be a Triumph Bonnie - it will slow down my public road speeds and I have a hankering to modify the heck out of one!
I guess I'm not ready to party with the Big Dogs yet... I don't think I'd be willing to pay more than about 8,000 new for a bike...unless it also gives a reach-around! I'll be happy to continue riding my 9er, or any number of very cool used bikes that can be had for less than 4,000

AGREED!
i dont think id ever buy a bike brand new as the depreciation is HUGE.
I have the $20,000 beemer along with a 2008 ZX14 that now has an almost 919 riding position so it has become a 175 rwhp old mans cruiser. I have 3 Kawasaki ZRX's with 2 of them being lowered and stretched and kitted and the 3d is total cruiser.
The wife has the 2007 red 919 with 2600 miles.
My bikes are my toys that never get sold so I never worry about $ count when buying toys for my toys. With the exception of the beemer that stays stock but gets abused like a ricer there is way to much money in all of them.
I sold my 9er in the fall, thinking of something else now, not really sure what I want though, It wont be a sport bike, they tend to make me want to drive to fast.
I kinda want old school look, Bonnie or Thunderbird Sport.

I bought a Victory Cross country $19,000 Traded two bikes and some cash for it. I will keep it for longer rides and overnight trips. I also try to keep something that is used cheap and might be fun. Right now that is my 03 919. I've bought my last hew/expensive bike since I am now retired and broke.
Replying to the OP only...I would rather have a fleet of sub $8,000 used bikes than one really expensive one. I would have a hard time spending more than $10k--in fact I couldn't. Bikes are supposed to be the cheap alternative.
I'd disagree that bikes are meant to be a cheap alternative - in the 70's and 80's yes. But no longer and they are not sold as such any more. It is all power (sports) or 'lifestyle' (cruisers and Harleys). If anything they are more likely an indication of a degree of wealth nowdays if you have a family, car, kids and a bike!

nah, they weren't just a cheap alternative in the 70's or 80's either. Having some, uh, experience riding in the 70's ... it was more about having fun, going fast, etc. Just like now.

+1000
New bikes are way too expensive, depreciation sucks. I'll wait to buy it off someone with more cash than me for half the price.

Luckily not everybody is the same so we have bikes for different reasons. If we all wanted cheap transportation we would all have scooters and 2.2 four cylinders cars.
The 919 is no more an all arounder than my ZRX was before I changed them. It is a bike that you are self satisfied with for what it will do. It is nowhere as comfy as the beemer nor near as fast or smooth as the 14 and other than being lighter than the ZRX there is no advantage. It is what we like and will settle for.
I am not downing the 919 because for some strange reason I seem to be on it a lot. I have a $21 hr job so my beemer was a major expense but I wanted to splurge for once because at age 56 I will probably not be able to do it again.
My bikes are my toys that happen to get me to work.
$20,000? I almost signed the papers for a Multistrada, the deluxe one is approaching $25,000 out the door. But as someone else mentioned earlier, if I can buy 3 or 4 cheaper bikes instead of one expensive one, I'd probably go that route. Our local Ducati dealer has a KTM Superduke 990 on consignment, low miles, pretty nice condition, and they said I could test ride it, I bet if I did, I would have bought it, but that would have pissed off the ole lady just showing up at home with it, so I didn't even ride it. And that bike was about $7500.
But I've almost bought a few bikes in the $20k range, but thought about it before pulling the trigger. And decided to just buy a used bike every few months or so, ride it and sell it. Just bought a DR350, turned around and sold it the next day and tripled my money, always looking for something else.
