Northeast Tour Recommendations? Vermont Maple Stuff?

Hey guys, I don't post here often but I'm looking for some advice.

Starting this Saturday I've got 8 days to ride from Virginia to Maine I've already picked out a few destinations and I'm looking for advice for a few more.

From the DC area I'm shooting up to Philadelphia by interstate. I don't want to spend much time in areas I could normally get to on a weekend.

From Trenton, just north of Philly I'm planning on taking some of the mountain roads (Rt 17A and 106) to Stony Point, NY.

Day 2 will be from Stony Point NY to Falmouth, MA, visiting a friend there. I'm planning on riding Rt 1 along the CT coast, crossing into RI, through Newport, and to Falmouth. Is there anything anyone can recommend I stop to see along the coast here?

I'll be doing a lot of riding on the first two days...probably sunrise to past sunset and then unwinding on Day 3 in Falmouth before hitting the road again.

From Falmouth, I want to hit up Mount Washington in NH, highest point on the east coast. And after that, head towards Quoddy Head State Park in Maine, the easternmost point in the US. That'll be days 4 and 5.

One thing I do want to hit up is some kind of maple syrup centric place in Vermont. Any recommendations there? Depending on where it is I can reroute and wrap it into the trip up to Maine, or stop by it on my way back.

Anything else I should see while I'm tooling around up that way?

-Thanks!

Thanks very much!

Here's my tentative route. Most of the route stops are there just so that my GPS route is the same as the Mapquest Route. On the non-Zumo Garmins, the route is recalculated by the GPS after its imported from Mapquest so its usually not the same. Adding points forces the GPS to route like it is on Mapquest. A PITA but better than fumbling with maps or trying to remember all this. I am bringing hardcopy backups in case something goes wrong w/ the GPS.

Day 1 - Shoot up to Philly, and then pick up here to Stony Point, NY. About 320mi, 7hrs 45min total
http://mapq.st/orJDTz

Day 2A - Stony Point, NY to Bransford, CT (no real stop here, just passing through)
100mi, 2hrs 30min
http://mapq.st/nD0G7A

Day 2B - Bransford, CT to East Falmouth, MA
163mi, 3hrs 35min
http://mapq.st/qS2VLo

Chilling out in Falmouth with a friend on Day 3.

Day 4 - East Falmouth, MA to Mt. Washington in NH
227mi, 4hrs, 50min
http://mapq.st/pw9sDM

Day 5 - Mt. Washington to Quoddy Head State Park, ME
273mi, 6hrs 35min
http://mapq.st/p1cUi9

Day 6 - Quoddy Head State Park, ME thru VT, to Albany, NY
520mi, 11hrs 10min (I won't finish this leg in a day)
http://mapq.st/q7Gao7

Day 7 - Albany, NY to Lehighton, PA
http://mapq.st/r8taM5
270mi, 6hrs 30min

Day 8 - Lehighton, PA to Centreville, VA
235mi, 5hrs 30min
http://mapq.st/rmAZMJ

I've got one extra day off after I get back, so that'll be my buffer if I start running behind. I'm thinking I might need it on the return leg on Day 6 since its so long and I also want to spend some time in Vermont.

When you get north of Princeton, NJ, take river road instead of 206. It's just east of point C on your day 1 map. More scenic, road has curves, less lights, less traffic, no slow moving trucks, will get you to Bridgewater faster.

Make the effort to skip rt1.. all of it.
A few nice roads along the way like 146, 156, will get you some nice riding near the coast. Rt 1 you will just be riding down a business road, thru the middle of every city along the way.

Theres alot of nice riding in the middle of CT, specially ont he eastern side. But yeah IMHO enjoy the water in RI instead.

rt1 is a major tourist area in ME and NH, traffic is slow and crappy. portsmouth NH is sweet to visit, just dont plan on making time on rt1 and its not very scenic.

Roger that! I'll skip route 1 and check out 146/156 and look for alternative routes in other areas as well. Sounds like Rt 1 is a lot like here in VA - lots of lights through business districts.

well, I'll go riding with you if its after 4pm, and as long as its not highway. I looked at your map and it seems like your riding 93 straight up. If it were a friday, I'd join you and go to my fathers place in NH. Just let me know what you want to do
