Without first installing the stator to confirm the issue... then my guess is right! Modern brushless stators last "forever". When my 300Kml cage alternator brushes wore out, its wipers had a very funny variable angle rate slow..slooower..then fast.. I replaced them for $40!
You are a good man keeping your buddy in your rear view. I am sure he is very grateful and made it easier to obtain trip approval from the "Front Office"
Hmmn... I don't know if they last forever. Here is what mine looks like after 14 years of abuse. Before I took it out I checked the stator and it was not producing over 12.3 volts at any rpm. Under 5000 it made around 10 volts. I think this might be the problem right here...

Wow you really abused it with road grime to short/BBQ the wires. Glad you got it working. Quick you have time for one more long trip???
How could he abuse it with road grime? It's inside the stator cover which has a gasket.
True. The wires outside the cover look to be completely intact and still in good working order so I don't think road grime is the culprit.

It looks to me like the sealer that is on all the winding/wires just started to break down with age and deteriorate. I don't think heat was a problem as I have never overheated this particular bike. I am concerned about the cooked wire though. That crap ended up in my oil. Hopefully it didn't cause too much damage.
I have a new gasket on order and will replace the stator, reg/rec and do a complete check of the wiring harness. This poor old girl needs some much needed TLC and a long rest, but I still want to do a couple small trips on her this year. Maybe going to Indy MotoGP.

fehren, I am looking for a little more info on this trip because I am thinking of doing a similar one this summer. I am wondering how many miles of unpaved roads you had to deal with? How far into Alaska did you go? I am guessing you took a ferry to Washington? Details on that? From where to where? how long? How much?
I drove to Fairbanks with the girlfriend last summer, 6000km's round trip. Couple hours worth of road construction with lots of dust, other then that there is a long section of road that has "permafrost" meaning the ground is frozen year round. It's like riding the mogul at the winter olympics.
huh i was there 4 years ago, lots of roadworks. I think they are never ending, due to the short working season.
I am going again this august, what an amazing place
Yeah it looks amazing. After seeing fehrens pictures I figure I should go there myself. It is close to me and I was about to plan a summer trip anyways. I am thinking of going to Anchorage and taking a ferry down to Seattle, head south into Oregon and then home. I am not worried to much about gravel, I have great throttle control. It's my ride partner, she will be on an 02 GSXR 1000. I'm sure she'll be fine.

I don't have an exact mileage figure on unpaved roads, but I'm sure the amount changes yearly. I went all the way to Fairbanks and then down to Denali and onto Anchorage. Once I was in Alaska the roads were pretty decent, but the one thing I remember was the long stretch of crap near the border between AK and Canada. Both sides of the border were mixes of sand, gravel, chip and tar and lots of humps, bumps and crevasses!
I rode in on the Alcan and rode out on the Cassiar Highway. I looked into the ferry, but I am glad I rode the Cassiar, it was also terrible at times, but the scenery and solitude was worth it!

Funny thing is, I met Ferhen on the way there.
That was kind of a one in a million meeting. Listen to this guy, when he says moguls.. he speaks the truth!

I initially tried to go slow through the gravel, but found that moving at a decent clip worked best. I was not blasting through at 80 mph or anything, but trying to tip-toe around in that crap was harder than just keeping a steady pace. Of course there are those bike swallowing sections of potholes and sinkholes to be on the lookout for.
Good luck, have a great trip. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Thanks Fehren. I will be using this thread as a guide. i think I will look into the ferry a little more. I would then be a bike trip and a cruise all in one. I would much rather ferry to Seattle and go south into Oregon before heading home. I will listen to Mr.t81, he is a wise fellow. I have met him and rode with him last year. This year even more.

Too bad I went there last year, 'cause I would go with you. And I only have two weeks holydays. Working for a living sucks ass

Come anyways. I am only taking two weeks. The one guy that will be going is only able to go from Grande Prairie to Anchorage and back to GP. He won't be able to ferry, because he has to get back to North Dakota for work. You could go back with him or go on with us.

I just asked my girlfriend, she said I should spend my two weeks holydays with her
After looking into the price of a ferry I think I'll be riding the whole trip. Something like $1300 for a motorcycle. Don't thik so. Round trip would be about 8600 Kms, which isnt too bad at all in two weeks.

I figured the same. The cost of the boat ride isn't really worth it in my opinion. I think we took about 2 weeks from Seattle up and back. It's a great trip!
