She approached me and started making conversation because she saw my riding gear, and she says she really likes motorcycles......
To preface this, she is kinda young (24) and fresh out of college, so she is filled with the certainty that she knows all about everything, even stuff she's not experienced with. She is very hard headed! Perhaps the 14 year age diff is contributing to my frustration....points to ponder.
Ok, so she does own a yammie FZ6R...she bought it new 2 years ago (and has only put 1100 miles on it!)
She got her endorsement shortly before getting the bike, but has no other riding experience. She apparently almost had an "oops" awhile back, which severely frightened her, so she has not been out riding much since.
Some damn fool (not me, a different one) has filled her head with bad riding advice. They laid on the old "Dont use your front brake or you'll fly over the bars!", and " training classes are silly", and several other goofy things. Fortunately, she sees the value in riding MOSTGATT, if not ATTGATT. HER main issue, from the one ride I've been on with her, is that she has not really ridden enough to become instinctive with the controls and how they interact.
I am trying to gently encourage her to get to an MSF class or two, as well as trying to get her out & about on the bike. I've also offered to spend some time in a parking lot, practicing maneuvers. I'm working at knocking the bad advice and closed-minded attitude out of her while I'm at it.
Wish me luck! Her too, of course

I'd preface everything and anything with "This is how I do it..."
mike nailed it, this right here is the key! also show her some internet sources, how pros use front brake, numbers, etc. use sources that are widely public and easily accessible, this'll give her more merit to read and give it credit rather than just hearing it from another "male" type deal. also inform her that ultimately, it's up to her and she has to decide if riding is for her or not. if it's not, she needs to get out before it kills her.
if it's for her, then she needs to take it upon herself to educate herself just as she did through college. use the college reference as much as you can.
find out what she majored in, and find similarities if you can. also more than anything else, dont let yourself become frustrated. focus on having a good time, be patient, and remember this: this isnt about you, this is about her.
good luck and most important, relax and have fun! try to invest in her as a person, a friendship, etc.
Damn man you didn't tell me she was that young! Maybe get her with a group so she can see how we all ride and let her aproach us with questions. No roads to twisty yet but a nice cruse around the town and some site seeing. I like the two up and chatbox idea. Take her out and explain why you are doing things that way and use the "This is how I do it" meathod that Mike and Pvster like so much. If you can't explain why you do it that way tell her thats what you learned at the MSF course.
Talk with ya soon........craddel robber.

Hahahahaha...if your lucky, I'll have a chance to introduce you while you're out here PV
IF i make it out there. my damned roommate cannot make up his mind if he's going or not. as for me, the trip has been pushed back to the 26th sadly. if he goes, we gotta decide if we're heading east or to the southwest. i'll keep you posted.
Maybe explain to her that at the track, they teach you not to use your REAR brake. Ask her why she thinks there are two huge brake discs on front and only one on rear. Oh, wait. You're trying to speak as a logical 30-something dude with a 20-something girl. Hmmm. Bend her over the FZ. Lol
Okay is this going to be a Bike trip Pvster? If so then you have to make a trip down to my neck of the woods with Shadow (and anyone else who would like to come). I would say that would be a great time to go up Pikes Peak and then a BBQ with some great local Microbrews......
Not trying to barge into any ones meet up I just like to meet new people.

that was the plan!!! but the biggest deterrent right now is $$. i have enough funds to do 2 of 3 legs of the trip i originally planned (shit!). so now i can only go to point b and back home. gotta figure out what point b is, and my roomate cant make up his mind if he's going or not. if he goes, we'll likely head southwest to phoenix and back up through cali since that's what he'll want to do. if he doesnt, i might do that myself or head east and check out the peaks with you guys.
edit: or everyone could just donate another $150 and i'll stick with my original plan, lol. i know, dreaming!
I would have stayed away unless you are going to do what Shmoo suggested.
What I mean by stay away is that do not put her on the bike when she is with you for teaching purposes. If anything happens you might get the blame... Let the pro's do the actual teaching on the bike.
You can cover the basics. Listen to what she knows and correct the obvious mistakes...

Nah, I don't see it that way. I riders have been teaching riders for as long as there have been motorcycles...If she wants me to, I will show heer what I can.
(Hey little girl...look at this! lmao)
I will continue to encourage her to get to an MSF course, and I even plan to offer to go with her.

I think if you want to slam here that's all right, bro. But why get all emosh on all her stupidity, unless of course it's for the yam spreading aspects in order to cater to your shank.
I think you need to hit the sex aspect only, rocking her hard headed world and then maybe she will be receptive to good example and advice where staying alive is concerned.
Does this make sense?

Pvster - when you headed that way?
I wanna come too!
If you guys don't have anything better to do Labor Day weekend, Jill & I are planning on coming out for our 3rd annual "Ride the Rockies" trip.
Shall we start a new group ride thread & get all the locals wrangled up?

i say hold your horses. i've had to put off my trip indefinately for now. when i redid my fork springs, i had the good idea of checking my brake pads and i'm glad i did! they need to be replaced bad. sadly though this takes even more money out of the travel fund and effectively means i cant go anywhere right now. i need to sell some stuff and sell my car to raise the cash for the upcoming bills to the wedding. fiancee promised me i could use some of the remaining cash to put into the trip

Oh, and uh... I agree with shmoo
Hooray!
I'll be looking forward to going for another ride with you guys, Doug! This is good news!

Have a budget and stick to it friend. Weddings take more money out of your pocket if your not carefull than a gold digger at a billionairs convenion.
isn't that the truth!! my daughter is getting married in Oct. and it's going to cost me an arm and both legs...that's why I decided to get a few mods done on the bike this spring before I have no money to spend!! but the wife caught on and finally put the brakes on for me
She can read all the books and take all the classes she wants. She's on too much bike.
Won't happen, but she needs to be on a 250 for a couple of years. When my son was 17, that's how he got started. He still speaks fondly of the 250 Ninja.

I've never entirely agreed with this philosophy. My first bike was a 750 and I never got kilt on it. taking the time to learn the bike you're on is the key. Go very slow & easy until your comfort zone expands and you'll be fine.
She is disciplined enough not to get in over her head, at this point she just needs more time on the bike to learn the subtle interaction of the controls.

I would have to agree. You can start with a 750 long as you respect the machine. But if you're a knucklehead on it, then you better be on a 500 or a 250. Or better yet not on one all
My first bike was a 96 GSXR 750 and I was 19. A lot of bike for that age and experience? Sure, but I knew what it could do and also knew I couldn't touch anywhere near its capabilities. I bought the thing before I even knew how to ride and before the MSF class, had to get the old man to ride it home from the previous owners garage.
I agree also. My 1st bike was a 92 ZX7R. I went slow and learned to respect it. Over time I got faster. Never went down and enjoyed every minute. I was very passionate about motorcycling and still am today. I hope she is passionate about motorcycling because if not, she won't like it and could get hurt.
My first bike was/is my 919. I've had it for 3 years and haven't killed myself on it...yet. Of course, I haven't ridden it much this year outside of commuting.
Lol, resurrection of another dead thread... I did what I could for this girl, but in the end she wanted to act like the silly 24yo she is. One day she'll either figure it out or she won't, but it's not my problem anymore!
Besides, I found someone better to spend my time with.
Thanks for the link, that book is pretty good too.
