Scott... ouch! Sorry to hear about the spill man. Take it from a man that has broken more bones than most - take it easy with the healing. Don't rush it or try to cut corners. Hope your MRI comes back with encouraging results.

I have broken my knee, femur, foot, ankle, etc. The broken femur took over 12 months of rehab and six of those was just to walk again. I share your comment about having more empathy for people with disabilities.

Take your time, let your injuries heal solidly. Feel better buddy.

My pleasure and hope it helps. When on I.R. I try to take the best care diet/rest/regiment to expedite recovery. My knee is oozing, but feeling strong; pedaled to video store and it didn't weld to the sheets overnight. I can't believe the damage from falling at 3MPH. We all must ante' for the best gear! Hope you get some good news on the MRI?

I did get good news from the MRI today. Doc says it's just a strained MCL with what he called "microtears" in the ligament, but nothing that won't heal up fine on its own. That and a bone bruise along with some fluid were all that the MRI showed, bone structure and cartilage were fine.

So it's just a matter of time, patience, rest, ice and more time. He said to give it a couple more weeks to let the damage heal before I try to flex it much and that it will probably be 4-6 weeks before it's back to normal. Depending on how I heal up I might need some physical therapy to regain the strength in my knee.

All in all that's the best I could have hoped for, basically just what the ER doctor said the first day, sprained ligament and a bone bruise.

When I was significantly younger, my nieghbor and I would spend nights and weekends drinking beer and working on his Willy's jeep with a Chev 350. It usually took about a month to repair the damage we had done from our previous play time. So, one day we got it running and decided to take it down the street where they were doing ground prep for an apartment complex on top of our motorcycle track. We decided jumping the Willy's would be a great idea. The first jump was funny, and I doubt we got more than a couple of inches of air. So, the second time we hit it harder and got much more air. But, the third time was a charm, he hit it HARD and we got some serious air, hit the ground hard, bounced, smash ourselves off of everything with our handy lap belts, and then heard an amazing noise. The exhaust had ripped off from the header. That is pretty darn loud under and old Willy's. After checking our wounds we eventually got the exhaust in the Willy's and pissed off all the nieghbors on the way home. It is amazing how much fun you can have just before injuries (pride and otherwise).

Well it's been six weeks since I hurt my knee. Big milestone today, I'm driving my truck for the first time, able to operate the clutch relatively pain free! I'm just wearing an elastic knee wrap now, finally was able to put the brace away. I can walk pretty normally without a limp now, can navigate up and down stairs without too much trouble as well. My knee's range of motion still isn't all the way back but I can sit normally in a chair anyway, still hurts if I bend it too far and hurts intensely if I accidently twist it. I expect I still have a couple of months to go before the pain totally goes away and it's 100% healed, but I'm happy to at least be at the point I am now after what seems much longer than 6 weeks.

I don't know about that Brian, the light wrap still feels good, my knee needs some support. What I'm wearing is like an elastic sleeve, it offers a bit of support and I wear it during the day when I'm up and walking around. I do take it off at home in the evenings and don't wear it when I sleep.

yeah... but i have rehabbed lots of knee and ankle and *(damn near everything else that moves)... those sleeves cut off blood supply and actually do more harm than good.... pain is there for a reason.. and the extra support that thing gives will allow you could allow you to overexert the knee and end up doing more harm than good.....

just to be safe... take it off... sit at your desk... have them bring you beer...

That's great news Scott! You'll be getting big air again before ya know it!

I'm back on the bike but still can't drive the truck without pain, that clutch kills me. Had a MRI on the knee yesterday, will find out Monday whether I need surgery or just rehab.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you Steve, I'm glad I did the MRI even though it showed I only had a sprained ligament, definitely put my mind at ease and made me more willing to work through a bit of pain as I continue to rehab. Although the hospital bills piling up on my desk that Anthem didn't cover aren't making me too happy!

Guess we have similar but different injuries, I haven't had a problem driving the truck today but when I sit on the bikes it's all I can do to get my left leg up on the peg and then I can't move my foot enough to shift gears.

Scott, I can relate to the bills piling up! I have United healthcare and they pretty much suck. I had to supply them with a copy of the police report showing no other vechicles were involved. A copy of my dec page from my bike insurance policy showing no PIP and a signed statement declaring that I have no other insurance before they would even authorize the MRI. Talk about jumping through hoops! I feel like a circus poodle.

I don't understand why MRI's are still so expensive either. I had one in 1991 right before I had back surgery and it cost $1,200. Flash forward 18 years, the one yesterday on my knee took 22 mins and cost $1,200. Somebodys making some cash.....

Steve

Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield hasn't been hard to deal with as far as arguing about coverage, it's just my portion of the bills that are adding up to be a significant amount. Your MRI was a deal, my MRI cost $2043.00, insurance paid $1346.44, leaving me with $696.56 due. The initial emergency room visit cost $995.00, insurance paid $784.16, my portion $210.84. There are a few more misc bills still coming in, looks like the whole experience will end up costing me about a grand.

Just be glad you don't have my policy. You would be paying 100% until you hit $3,000, THEN you pay 20% of everything until you get to a total out-of-pocket of $6,000. Plus, United Healthcare can't the doctors down like Anthem can.

Man, I thought my MRI was expensive, yikes! I've already spent over $600 and the bills are still coming fast & furious. Every doc that came within 100 yards of me in the hospital has sent me a bill and the ambulance ride was $989.00. which I still haven't paid. I may go broke if I have to have the surgery, lord only knows what that would cost. I may just blow it off and be a cripple the rest of my life
