We have at least 2 blood drives per year where the bloodmobile comes on site at work. Makes it so convenient, you just do it. So, yep, every time I can. The only time I couldnt was once right after my knee surgery.
That explains your Avatar. That's really you, isnt it?
Actually, I photographed that avatar from a newspaper clipping. There were some local artists giving a show displaying their artwork in reaction to the 911 catastrophy. I know i'ts kind of morbid, but that pic just struck me as funny as he**!
At the time I was trying to master a CNC grinder and posting that clipping just seemed to convey how frustrating it was to maintain .0001".
My real face is much more anguished

Good on ya Darkace. For not giving up.
Does the quantity of blood types pretty much trump any discussion of racial differences. Who knows who might be a hero.
Thanks. I am hoping that I am still able to. Cause, hell, on the off chance that I might need blood I am goona need O neg. So better do what I can to help the stock out.

Alright, just got back from donating. The lady said it is a go for licensed vaccines as long as it has been for a year. I asked her specifically about the anthrax vaccine and she said as long as it has been a year it is fine. Got me some Nutter Butters and water afterwards. I forgot what it felt like to give blood. It is like a high all by itself (well sorta).

I've given once so far, on the 20th I'll be eligible to give again. This is of course assuming the roadrash on my thigh/knee doesn't DQ me. I wasn't given any treatment at the hospital, other than "slow the #@$% down" so I don't think it should be a problem. The last time I got a free t-shirt, pair of concert tickets, pair of movie tickets, and a hat. A few weeks later they sent me a notice that my cholesterol was 'above average' so I started watching my diet, and another pair of movie tickets! My goal in life is to give more blood than my father, who gave every chance he could, because it got him out of work hehe. I think he's over 10 gallons, I'll have to ask next time we talk.
Thanks for the reminder. I need to get back on track with this. A- here.
Wouldn't it be funny if some poor chap received my pint from the bloodbank & came out of the
hospital having a weird attraction towards antiquated turbobikes? haha
I've been to the UK many times.
I didn't know you couldn't donate blood cause of this.
A few years ago, Red Cross here in the US came up with new rules - if you were in England during the 80's, you could no longer donate blood. I don't know it if meant if you visited or lived - I lived there. Also, don't know if that applies to Canada or not.
I work for a fairly large company and they bring in the blood mobile about every two months. I give mainly to get the free t-shirts :-) . Here are the current eligibility guidelines for reference:

Here you go Sporty:
From RedCross, "Travel Outside of U.S., Immigration
Wait 12 months after travel in an area where malaria is found. Wait 3 years after living in a country or countries where malaria is found. Persons who have spent long periods of time in countries where "mad cow disease" is found are not eligible to donate. This requirement is related to concerns about variant Creutzfeld Jacob Disease (vCJD). Learn more about vCJD and donation. Persons who were born in or who lived in certain countries in Western Africa, or who have had close contact with persons who were born in or who lived in certain West African countries are not eligible to donate. This requirement is related to concerns about HIV Group O. Learn more about HIV Group O, and the specific African countries where it is found."
And they don't research and test every person for every disease every time soooo, honor system everyone(or assumption that everyone is completely aware of anything they've contracted.). Geez.
I give blood. While I was in college, I'd swing by the trailer when it was around. Now, there's a blood mobile that comes every three months to the office. Actually, it's been a while since I've seen it. I'll have to ask my secretary about it...
I don't mind giving blood and I give blood whenever I am able, but the local blood center nags me with phone calls urging me to donate. I hate it.
I'm actually wearing a blood donor t-shirt right now (pajama shirt!)
A few years ago I was up to 9 gallons, should be over 10 now. I've been trying to get by there since I was elligible last month. I loves me some cookies. Here, as long as your tattoo was from an approved parlor you do not have to do the 12 month wait. Luckily the one I got in May was from an approved parlor. I may try to get the boss to let me take a long lunch and donate today. Its good to see so many of you that take the time to do this.
Ah, good thread, glad someone revived it. I'm a big proponent of taking some time to bleed a little. I too have the 'magic' blood (O- cmv-) so I try to be good about giving. They do what's called the 'power red' over here where they take two pints out and collect all of the red blood cells, then give you back some plasma and saline. It sort of sucks (pun intended) how it makes you feel, but the times between donations is far longer and they tend to prefer it for my VIP style.
If anyone ever wants a nice diversion at work, organizing blood drives is a fantastic way to pass some time!
A high school teacher once told me a funny story about this. He said that the red cross, or whoever it was he gave through, would always call and bug him even though he had a common blood type. Eventually, he asked, 'Why do you guys keep calling so much? I have the most common blood type!' They evidently replied with something along the lines of, "Exactly. It's the most common, so there's a very high demand for it".
Just 'cuz you're not O-, doesn't mean there's a low demand. Do your best to give when you can, if you can. I would if I could, but I am unfortunately black-listed from the red cross, for particularly foolish reasons.

I always like to when I can... they used to have a shop on the walk home from work so I'd frequently stop in to warm up, check out the beautiful nurses, watch free pay perview and eat cookies while donating plasma... ahhh the good life. Unfortunatly around here I have to go down town ( 40 min drive ) and deal with lines b/c the local clinic pays so the bums are all about it.
I believe it is still three years after being inked.
Nope ... just one ... lol

Just got my 15 gallon pin last month. These days, I do plasma and/or platelets every couple of weeks at our local non-profit blood bank. You can tell they're non-profit because they only stock ice cream sandwiches in summer. :-(
Every time I read over the questionnaire, it makes me realize what a boring life I lead. No tats, piercings, jail time, amazing travel adventures, or tropical diseases.
