I just saw this movie on the big IMAX screen in 3D yesterday. I thought it was pretty damn cool! I haven't seen a movie in 3D in probably 20 years...I liked it, but felt kinda disoriented after the movie was over. it almost felt like I'd had a few drinks!

I didn't know AVATAR was a 3D movie!?
I've NEVER seen a movie in 3D before,
I did see "The Dark Knight" (batman) in IMAX though, pretty sweet if you sit far back enough,
otherwise the action sequences are a blur.
I can only think of 2 other 3D movies...
the most recent Final Destination
and before that it was one of the JAWS movies
I though it was cool because they dident go out of there was to make things jump out at you.
Now during the previews they showed alice in wonderland in 3D and that looks amazing, things were all over they place, kinda felt like I was on drugs...lol. this big cat came right at me and smiled, kinda freaky...lol

Amazing movie in general, but seeing it in 3D (Imax or not), is just mind blowing.
Something they'll never tell you at the theaters about 3D movies, to see the entire screen in focus and to keep from going cross-eyed, you gotta sit in the center area of the theater. The prime spot would be perfect center from all corners (for sound too!). But more importantly centered from side to side.
Movie's 3hrs, but doesn't seem like it at all. Question is, what if we were the aliens??
There was a bunch of aliens working at a traditional mexican resturaunt 60 miles north of me. I saw there pictures in the paper and they didn't look any different than most humans I've seen... Scary. But anyways I saw the movie in 2D and am going back with the wife for 3D next weekend. Looking forward to it!

Opinions are like assholes... and you're an opinion.
Anyone else think James Cameron has gotten away with the world's most blatant attempt at plagiarism? It's been a while, but when I saw the movie on new years day, all I could think of was a VHS I had as a child -Fern Gully. I mean right up to the big tree thing. Great movie -yes. Revisiting a 20 year old movie with modern 3d effects? Yes.
I went & saw it it 3D on new years day... A - MA - ZING ! If you have ANY interest in seeing it, SEE IT IN 3D ... DON'T WAIT FOR DVD
By far the most visually stimulating movie I've ever seen.
Of course, there is some controversy about the film, in more than one aspect:
I definitely noticed the Green and anti-war message, and references in the film to Iraq, Vietnam and the American colonial period to emphasize the fact that humans have a terrible history of entitlement in which we take what we need from nature and indigenous peoples and don't give back. It didn't offend me personally, but it sure made me a little ashamed to think about where we've been and where we're going as a society, especially when the movie was over... we were some of the last people to exit the theater, kicking our way through loads of trash & wasted popcorn & soda, 3D glasses discarded on the floor, (even after a message on the screen recommended placing them into a bin at the exit doors for recycling).
We are wasteful creatures & we take too much for granted without concern for consequences. And the worst part is that because the next generations will learn by example, we're not teaching them to care either, (I'm speaking in generalities here) and when we see examples that reflect our wrongdoings we get all bent out of shape & cry "that's not fair! I'm special! I DESERVE special treatment!" We need a good healthy dose of humility & compassion for our own kind. This movie (IMO) points this out... so, sorry I got all riled up... had to get it off my chest.
I noticed most of the "messages" too. And the ferngully copy. Still, I haven't seen a movie that defined -fantastic- in a long time. Won't go see it in 3D but we're gonna own it. fo sho.

Visually a very stunning movie and with the 3D it was awesome, but the story line is very old and has been done a million times. A big evil company with a evil military trying to wipe out the little guy.
I just saw the movie tonight at the local IMAX 3D. Ummm, it was ok at best. Sure the environments and visual effects were pretty good, and some of the 'alien' creatures were the most original I've seen in any sci-fi/fantasy movie I've seen in a long time, but yeah, the story was old as sin. To be honest with you it reminded me of a modern version of Dances With Wolves. The only better part being that you didn't have to watch Kevin Costner "grace" the screen.
Obviously this is one of those movies that if you're going to see it, see it on the big screen and in 3D, otherwise it wouldn't even be worth falling asleep to on DVD or Blu-ray at home.

I wanna go see it again in non-3D and sit in the very back, cuz i got some serious motion sickness from this movie. The movie is very much Aliens meets Dances with Wolves, but it was still a pretty spectacular theatrical experience.
Welcome back to the big screen, James Cameron!
also good to see Sigourney Weaver back in the action
The animation, etc. was amazing. Overall it was ok. I saw it in 3-D and it was like there was like a glare within the 3-D glasses or like the glasses were dirty (weren't - I asked for new ones with the same result).
The green message was pretty obvious.
The last 3D movie I saw was Jaws3D.
I read about all the perceived flaws with Avatar, the antiquated story, cheesy messages, blah blah and chose to see it anyway in 2D. I liked it for the visual effects, the gun fire/explosions, and the hot 8ft tall alien chick but I'm pretty easily amused. Once I'm away from work, not being nagged, have a giant screen and a bucket of popcorn the rest is just details.
LOS ANGELES - James Cameron's "Avatar" had a $41.3 million weekend to shoot past "Star Wars" as the No. 3 movie on the all-time domestic box office charts. Next stop, "The Dark Knight."
"One guy makes two movies in 10 years, and they're by far the biggest movies of all time. That's remarkable," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for the studio.
I guess the press liked it, won for best picture at the golden globes and best director james cameron, im just happy a sci-fi movie won and not some boreing chick flick

My wife and I saw it for the second time last night in IMAX 3d. The movie was at 6:30 pm and had been sold out since 4:30 pm that day... A fact I found amazing since it's been out for some time now...

Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all. "
I'm still trying to find time to go see it. The one time we tried it sold out as we were standing in line for tickets. Everyone I know that has seen it has said the same thing - spectacular visuals, so-so story, 20-30 minutes too long but worth seeing.
I didn't know you could see it in 2D. There are half a dozen IMAX theaters nearby and all are showing it in 3D, and it's playing in Real D 3D at every other theater in the area. I just assumed it was only out in 3D.
I just read that George Lucas wants to (once again) tweak the Star Wars saga and re-issue all the movies in 3D.
