llama: I would highly suggest you reconsider your size. I'm almost the exact size as you. I'm 32 in the waist (well sort of), 36" sleeves, and 40 in the chest. Just got measured for a wedding I'm in, and I know this is my size. The only jacket I found that fit me was the Joe Rocket Sonic 2.0 jacket, in a Medium Tall size. Joe Rocket is one of the FEW companies that actually offers tall sizes. Even then, they only offer it on a few models of their jackets.

I really dig the Sonic 2.0 jacket though. It fits me well and feels tight.

I think that's the thing to remember. If the jacket feels loose ANYWHERE, it's not the size you need. The armour needs to fit close to your body so that it doesn't move around in the event of a crash. That's why I just bought a new mesh jacket, because I could physically move the elbow and shoulder pads around too much.

If it feels a bit tight, that's probably just right.

If you want to know, I bought a RevIT! Air Mesh Jacket, and it fits almost perfect. They don't offer a tall size so the sleeves are a bit short, but other than that I love the jacket.

I've tried it on, but since this is my first jacket I'm not sure if it actually fits correctly. The arms are almost perfect, and I can adjust the waist. The chest seems to fit well enough in the front, but all the slack makes it look really baggy up on my back, and if I leave the back pad in it makes me look like a hunchback. I'm also not sure just how long/short the torso should. Does anybody have any tips on fitting a jacket?

that sounds about right for joe rocket, as long as sleeves are ok and your chest fits ok. A couple of reasons there is so much slack in the back: as you said above, there is a back pad and this jacket was designed for a sport bike aka crotch rocket. Once you crutch, it should fit nice and snug on the back.

As far as torso goes, it your personal preference. I have both short and regular torso. Short torso one fits/feels better with my riding pants as my pants come up pretty high and cover my lower back. Also short one doesn't crowd/wrinkle on your belly when you crunch

I totally hate the long torso jackets for the bunching around the gut. Looks like a pot belly IMO.

Regarding your size though I think it's wrong. If you are a 40 in the chest I would think you would need a 42 at the most. New enough told me that if you unzipped the jacket and fold one side over the other around the gut, and you have over 2 inches of overlap, you should consider the next size down. That's why I got a medium instead of a large and it fits great.

I do wonder why Joe rocket sizes some by L,M,S then others by the chest size though.

Just a follow up to an earlier post, this jacket has worked out great for me, sleeves are long enough, it breathes well, has good zippered pockets and doesn't feel heavy like a lot of leather jackets. It's really broken in nicely with a bit of use and feels very comfortable. A large fits well, not too big in the body and can be adjusted around the waist.

Tour Master Coaster Air II Leather Jacket - Street Bike - Men's Riding Gear - Motorcycle Superstore

Found pants that zip onto it and match the flat finish, checked them out during MotoGP weekend at a vendor and ordered them from MotorcycleSuperstore for less money...

Cortech Latigo Pants - Street Bike - Men's Riding Gear - Motorcycle Superstore

Pants have an 8" zipper and a full circumference one, makes a nice set of leathers when hooked together with the jacket. Large pants fit me well at 6'2, 180lbs with long legs, plenty of length to tuck into boots and the knee armor hits in the right spot.

Thanks for the tips, guys. One of the reasons I bought a size 48 is it was the smallest size newenough still had in stock. For $109 on closeout, I figured it was worth a try. I'm waiting to return it so that I can hopefully find something to exchange it for.

I went to Cycle Gear yesterday and tried on a Firstgear Mesh-Tex jacket in Tall Large. It actually fit pretty well, but I didn't really like how cheap it felt. The arms didn't have tension straps, so they were kind of loose, especially after taking out the wind liner. The waist only had two adjustments, and on the smallest one it wasn't all that snug.

I also tried on a leather Joe Rocket somethingorother in Large, and it seemed to fit ok, except the bottom come up to about an inch below my belly button. The guys there said that's about normal, as you don't want the leather to bunch up if you have an aggressive riding position. How short is too short? I don't want to look like a big man in a little coat...

It sounds like my only other option may be the Joe Rocket Sonic 2.0 in Tall Large. I was really trying to stay away from an all black leather jacket because I'm in NC, but I guess the nice thing is it has mesh side panels like the Blaster jacket I first bought.

if they don't take it back i wear a 48 chest.... we can work out a sale... .......... you are probably gonna need a medium size... but the thing is you want the jacket as tight as possible ...

The problem is Firstgears's smallest Tall size is Large.

I'll let you know about the jacket

llama: The Sonic 2.0 jacket does have reflective piping on it for what it's worth. It's better than nothing. I personally can't stand having a long jacket in leather. Mesh I think would be better, but leather is thicker and when it bunches up it's just uncomfortable IMO.

But like I said previously, and Barton has reiterated, you do want it to fit a bit tight. If you're a tall guy like myself, I think you'd really like the Sonic 2.0.

One last thing, don't cheap out on the jacket if you can afford more. You'll keep the thing for a long time and your skin is about as important as your head. You wouldn't buy a $50 helmet...don't buy a cheapo jacket either. Just my opinion.

Finally found a Medium Tall on ebay! Newenough listed early November as their ship date...
Soon I'll have some proper protection. I've been feeling a little stupid riding around in a t-shirt the past few weeks. Saw a college student on a cruiser in shorts and t-shirt earlier today while riding and didn't feel so bad.

I hope you get that jacket soon. I just had an accident and f'ed up my knee really good. I can't walk on it at all. I had my helmet and revit jacket on, but now I wish I would have had some protective pants too. I would be missing half of my face if I had one of those dumb turtle shells on my head. I only have minor road rash on my forearm but no broken bones.

Moral of the story: don't underestimate the importance of proper gear. I'm ordering some boots and pants soon. Gotta fix the 919 first though.

What a Sunday.

Man, not another knee injury! Sorry to hear that, get healed up soon. And yeah, when I'm able to ride again it won't be without pants to go with my jacket.

Ouch, that sucks. How'd the jacket hold up? I hope the knee injury doesn't turn out to be too serious.

The Rev It Air jacket held up well or well enough I suppose. The shoulder padding prolly kept me from breaking anything on my left side. The forearm section ripped open and I got some roadrash there. Overall though it served it's purpose. I can't wear it again as it's shredded up pretty good, but it would have been horrible without it.

My knee is still horrible. Can't put any weight on it hardly.

Have you had it checked out yet? I finally got an MRI on mine which put my mind at ease nothing was majorly torn up, just a matter of time and healing.

And welcome to the messed up knee club, Mayday and I commiserate at least once daily!

I went to an ortho doc but he said it's still too early to tell. I do think an MRI is going to happen next week. If he doesn't have me get one I will find a new doc. The doc that stitched me up said I looked ok, but once she started the sewing she thought I might have had some tendon damage (ligament damage...can't remember).

I really hope I don't have. Not looking forward to knee surgery. I also just found out that the bike is totaled. Pretty sure I'm going to take the money and not buy it back. Progressive is treating me right and paying for accessories like the yoshimura exhaust. Once I'm walking again I will be on the hunt for another 919...If I can convince the wife to let me ride again.

Good luck with your healing, takes lots of time and rest. My post count has certainly gone up since I've been laid up!

Yes ESB, welcome to our lovely little club! The I wish I would have worn knee armor club. (see thread i crashed for pics of my wreck) My knee is jacked up! I'm still limping around a month later but my bike is fixed. Almost totaled it but not quite. Progressive fixed me up, very happy with them. They even paid me for all new gear and the first thing I bought was knee armor. Knees heal very slowly I'm finding out. Ice is your friend, so is advil. Good luck with it.

grr, the jacket arrived yesterday, and guess what... it's too long

The arms come up to the bottom of my palms, but that's not too big a deal. It definitely bunches up around the stomach. I guess I really just need a medium...

So, went down yesterday, and the Sonic held up pretty well. The only problem is I had the fabric side covers off, and one of the zippers contacted the ground and took out a couple of teeth. I can get the covers back on somewhat easy, but unzipping it is a little more difficult. I would've hated to have to replace the entire jacket because of a stupid zipper. I do have a small spot of bad rug burn on my forearm near my elbow from the mesh liner in between the armor and my skin.

As I was warned, jeans do not make good riding gear. They ripped right open when my knee hit the road, and left me with two abrasion on the outside of my left knee. Definitely investing in some riding pants of some kind.
