I've been using a set of Skull Candy noise canceling ear buds($25). I do a lot of highway riding and like to listen to some tunes to pass the time. When I ride around town I leave the buds in but turn off the tunes.
I've been wearing my military issue, light green flanged earplugs for, oh, 20 years or so.
Still have the little cannister painted Army green that they live in.
I call that value!!
If you hit up a good hardware store or go online, you can buy in bulk and save quite a bit. I got 200 pairs of good plugs (Moldex PuraFit 6800) for $25 shipped.
I know there is another earplug thread where I posted the ones I use. Oh well, I use the Howard Leight Smart Fit earplugs
I cut the aglets off the chord, then shove it in the end of the earplugs for support, then keep them in the plastic case in my pocket of my riding pants. I have 4 plugs in one container.
Never wore them until I installed the Yoshis. After that, I bought some $20 noise canceling earbuds from walmart which work really good. Then came my birthday and I got a pair of Shure earbuds. The Shure's really sound nice but the foam squishes over the speaker when I put on my helmet and I can't hear them. The cheapo's have a more plasticy body and work better. The Shure's however come with several sizes and textures of bodies so I am going to try a different set. They work good for mowing the lawn as well.

No plan survives first contact...but there's always a plan.
I prefer the disposable foam ones, the type you roll small with your fingers, insert in ear, they expand, for me, they are the best of the best - and they are dirt cheap to boot.
or
(E-A-R Classics / E-A-R TaperFit-2 - either cost around $15.00 for 25 pair, and you can find them for even less)
Google free earplugs / sample earplugs - plenty of free samples out there to try.
I use them when I ride, when I mow, when I shoot -
I've tried literally dozens of different styles, as mentioned, the more expensive ones ended up never being used.......
i use the same kind all others hurt my ears..after 30 years of riding i tryed ear plugs...first ride i found myself going faster and riding around in a higher rpm range..after getting use to them i cant ride without them..didnt realize how loud the wind noise is without the ear plugs...little mouth lube and i slide those babys in there deep

Kevin if money is not an object get something like these. Custom Fit Earphones | Personal Listening :: Westone
You get hearing protection and the ability to listen to music and or phone without needing to turning up the volume full.
I can not say this strongly enough, please wear ear protection.
Talk with anyone, who has lost or damaged there hearing from noise and they will tell you protect your self.
There is a medical term for it but you get a bonus when losing your hearing, it's phantom noise's, the common one's are ringing, whistling or bells that go on for long periods of time and can really effect sleep and many have literally gone out of there minds and some comitted sucide.
Unless you are behind a full fairing and full face helmet, riding over 55 for any period can hurt your hearing.
I commonly forget to reinsert my ear plugs, I have started putting them on head stock next to the key.
