RC51 - splitting the case.

Hello all.

I'm getting ready to pull the motor in my 01 RC and replace the parts in the tranny that need replacing (no 5th gear, difficult to get into 4th)

A little bird told me that there's a guy hanging around here (Mike) thats got a motor and tranny he's trying to part ways with.

Anyway, I thought I'd say hello, and ask some of the old Roguer's around here that might not frequent .org as often as they used to for a little help and/or guidance.

Haha... So James is a little birdie now huh?

Welcome -
As for splitting the case, i have not done it. I was planning on it last summer when I high sided the RC and broke my collar bone. THe engine has been sitting in the garage un touched since.

I can give you an online copy of the Honda Service Manual if you have an FTP site or a very generous e-mail system. (about 100MB)

Mike, how did you end up with the motor sitting in the garage?? Did you end up getting a whole new motor? I'm weighing my options.
also, did you swap to an 02 swinger when you pulled the motor?

Ragdoll, thanks but I've got a couple hardcopy manuals.
I've got an 01 RC and an extra 02 manual if you'd like to have a hardcopy.

This engine let go at CMP. I got a lightly used transmission and intended ot work on it. Next track day was coming up fast, so I ended up buying an 03 motor with all electronics etc to put it in quickly.

It worked well, so the 01 sat. I planned on doing the work at the end of season.... Then came the highside...

No need to split the cases just to swap out a transmission on it. Its a cassette type tranny. Just pull the clutch and a few other bolts and the whole thing should come right out.

Evad,
Buddy I REALLY wish you were right, if you are it'll make me the happiest guy in the state. But I'm pretty sure the cases need to come apart.

anybody else know if it'll come out from behind the clutch?

Got pretty deep into it tonight.

Reached a good stopping point, I've got to borrow a flywheel holding tool to continue.

Mike, the cylinder bores look pretty darn good, just some minor visual scratches, but you cant feel them with your finger tip.

I hope everything works out.

It ran strong all the way till the Transmission let go.

Mike, what exactly did the tranny do when it let go?

A quick visual inspection and everything looked okay.
Dogs aren't rounded, forks look straight and none of the gears look badly worn.

I'll borrow some measuring tools and mic it all out to make sure it's in spec, but it's hard to see what the problem coulda been?

5th gear was the problem. It fell out of gear at least a dozen times at CMP causing me to call it a day (wet conditions made for the bike being extrememly unstable when falling in and out of gear.

Brought it home and put it on a dyno to see.
Third run it bucked so hard the entire dyno shook.
THe operator immediately pulled in the clutch and that is the last it ran.

Exactly the same problem I had.

I really hope when I dissassemble the trans I find something very wrong.
If I can't visually see the problem it's gonna bug the hell outta me.

Check the shifter forks and look really closely at the engagment dogs - But then agaon, with the torgue those bike make it would be a good thing to take a good hard look at the bearings in the case and the shaft the gears sit on - if youve got a input or output shaft bearing failing youd have all kinds of problems.

I see what your talking about in the picture, but it's just the flash or something. The gears and spline shaft look perfect in person.
