919 vs XR1200

So my plan for tomorrow is to head to the dragstrip here in Fayetteville to finally race my buddy and his H-D XR1200. He has a PC and a Vance and Hines pipe that sounds real mean. He's claiming he ran low 11's with his bike at about 120, but I'm not sure. The XR is at an incredible weight disadvantage and has about 10 less peak HP stock, but I'm not sure about the gearing and it has 74 lbs of torque (stock). Add in the pipe, PC and I can't recall for sure but maybe an airbox improvement and I'm not sure what the deal is. He weighs about 150ish and I'm about 190 without gear. I don't know what a stock XR runs in the 1/4 mile or how it responds to the simple mods outlined here. Got any tips for me besides hitting his kill switch at the lights? I ran a best of 11.92 at 111MPH, 1.92 60ft. and a horrible reation time too obscene to post here all on a stock '06 9er.

go to a parking lot and practice your launch it's a big part of drag racing when bikes are close and if you look at the power curve of a 919 it does not gain any power after the start of the redline so make sure you don't push it and hit the revlimiter.

At about what RPM would be a good shift point? I got about 6 runs in my first time out so I didn't get to play alot with shifting. I was thinking 500 before redline?

i have gone to the track a lot of time with my 07 919, i dont have many mods but they include exhaust, intake and a 520 conversion. i ran 11.08-11.15. i would say shift last second before rev limiter..., also remember to duck down as low as you can. makes a huge difference...i made my launch around 5500 rpm... good luck

I have a hard time believing that the XR1200 runs low 11's.

having owned both bikes, unless you go down, you're plenty safe.

He hasn't ran that number on his Harley.

He's pretty good with the talk. He's not your typical harley guy, though. He did some flat track in his slightly younger years, so the XR just pulled him in. He could give 2 shits for the brand. I was skepticle of his times myself just based on the power/weight ratio, but he could outride me with a tricycle if he wanted.

still, you've got 25 ft lbs on him in stock trim. I don't think he's gonna get that out of a pipe and pc.

It'll be a race. But I still say, advantage: niner

practice if you're worried. let us know.

I would think dropping 1 or 2 teeth on your front sprocket would help your 1/4 mile time but I'm sure one of the semi-serious drag racers (I'm not) could tell you for sure.

I would seriously doubt anything much below 11.5 on the Harley as you described it and 11.5 would be damn quick for that bike. All things being equal, your 919 is quite a bit quicker than the XR but as you know launching it is at least half the battle.

What he forgot to tell you that after he ran a genuine 13.0 it was then Harley-corrected down to the 11's to give a true indication of where a Japanese or Italian 1200cc bike would run.

The Harley-correction applies to many aspects of motorcycledom from the theory that jacket tassel's improve aerodynamics to high sissy-bars having a rear 'spoiler' affect and giving the back wheel more traction.

Never drag raced myself, but I remember a conversation some time ago with a guy getting pretty good times out of a stock Niner, and he said he did better by launching in 2nd gear.

I win 2 for 3!! My best of 11.65 @ 113.12 mph w/ 1.86 60ft. to his 12.20 @ 108.77 w/ 1.96 60ft. I must say my reaction times left me playing catch up, but I had him by the 1/8. I miffed one launch so bad it cause a 3.10 60ft, and I couldn't catch him (had a finish margin of .87 sec)... We didn't get a chance to swap rides, but it seems the XR is incredibly easy to launch. He had pretty consistent 60fts (2 in the 1.80s) and he said he just dumped the clutch and held on. Overall I was pretty impressed by his times, but it just wasn't enough to take out the 919.

The 919 is a deceptively wicked machine

Japanese horses are better fed and more motivated. I read that someplace, can't recall where.

Good on you for the win.

Has he had it tuned? You have to be wary of those big lumbering twins. I had a yamaha warrior and used to post over at rswarrior.com. Stock it put down 80HP/95TQ. Lots of guys put on a V&H propipe, velocity stacks and a PCIII and were posting charts of 90-95HP/110TQ. It was very receptive to mods. With a good launch those numbers would put it in the 11's.

Are those theoretical "11's"? Or are those actual measured ET 11's?

Just asking.

Weeeellll, that would be some of my precision guesswork. I was thinking that since the warrior supposedly pulled mid 12's stock, that much of a bump in power could get a guy into the 11's. Keep in mind, 11.99 is the 11's. I could be wrong. What do you think?

Again this is hearsay, but a few minor mods supposedly gets a Vrod into the 11's.

That's about the only way I could put it. No pipe and PC is going to transform that iron horse into a thoroughbred.

To put it in terms just for the fun of it.

The niner has four cylinders working like a team of sailors on an americas cup yacht.

The HD has two fat guys in coveralls huffing away on a handcart.

I didn't have a chance to ask. We did 3 runs one after the other and then I got a call that my in-laws were having car trouble (and they live with us, so that means I'm having car trouble) and I had to run. He's kinda a sore loser too. It might be best to let him chew on it for awhile.

My In-laws just immigrated over from Holland and lived here for 7 weeks till they bought and got into their house......Longest 7 weeks of my life!!!!

I feel for you, unless they are paying all the bills, but if they call, it just makes you sound like their employee....

Nice Kill on the HD...

Priceless. Just went on a group ride with co-workers last night. Me, an 08 FZ1, two beemers, a wing and 7 Harleys. I thanked them for letting my sewing machine tag along with all their biplanes.

They are currently unemployed, but they make up for it by watching my kids while the wife and I are at work and the m-i-l cookes and cleans for us. I'd say it's a fair trade. Worst part is english is their 2nd language.
