I've been dying to tell a story, now I've got something to talk about... my motorcycle, my shenanigans, my life.
April 22 was my son's sixth birthday, and his mom was planning on getting him a bicycle...
I guess this might have been the source of my longing...
The week of his birthday, I suddenly woke up with a desire to look at motorbikes again, since I haven't ridden in 15 years.
The next day, I went down to my local Honda dealer, and asked him if he has any sort of Cafe Racer style bikes... he said "how about the 919" to which I replied, a what?
so he showed me the bike. All logic and reason left me, as I was sure this was what I'd bee looking for.
While my son was with his mom, I picked up some cheap leather gloves, borrowed a leather jacket, and bought the cheapest helmet I could... then I took the bike for an hour test drive... and bought it as soon as I got back to the dealer.
Purchase Date - April 25, 2009 - 25,000km
9er down
I was going a little too fast in the suberbs, when I shifted down a little too aggressively going into a corner... my back end skipped, then wobbled violently after going over a manhole cover, and I panicked...
An oncoming car was approaching on the inside of a left hand corner, and rather than push the bike into the corner, I pulled it up... laid 100' of rubber on the pavement before I left the road.
Last thing that went through my mind was - I'm going way too damn fast for gravel... then the bike dove into the ground.
The oncoming car watched it all, and stopped to ensure I regained my cool before I got back on and took off, thanks.
No injuries more than a scratch on my wrist, a little on my shin, and a slightly pulled/twisted ankle.
The bike was another story... Insurance wrote it off completely, damage estimated at $8200
I was able to retain the salvage bike for $500
I guess I now truly own the bike.

Sometimes you eat the bar, and sometimes, well, he eats you. Hard to believe there's no mention of a hurt/totalled ego here. I know every time after I wreck a bike (yeah, I've done it more than once) my pride has a big dent in it.
I'm glad you are alright. I dunno about up there, but down here insurance companies will write off a bike that's simply been dropped at a stand still, just so they don't have to deal with it. Then they get to rape you on premiums.
I learned the hard way that sometimes it's better to get a used bike and fix it up as opposed to trying to repair it. $400 gas tank off of ebay (that was dented, as opposed to what the seller said) $500 for gauges, $50 side cover, mirrors, blinkers, headlights...yeah it adds up quick. I've spent almost as much on repairs as I paid for the bike.
Glad you were not seriously injured. Keep us posted on where you go with this.Posted 06-23-2009 at 11:51 PM by beefsalad
