winter gear review/fun in a parking lot

Posted 12-26-2010 at 03:48 PM by beefsalad

So I accidentally destroyed my balaclava last year, and having not been impressed with it's performance it did not break my heart. I got the itch to ride today, but at 50f I knew it wouldn't last long before something got uncomfortably cold. Off to CycleGear I go (only shop in town open on sunday.) I ended up getting myself The ST Wind Plus which performed really well on the short ride I took it on. I hit triple digit speeds (hey, I had to know how well it worked right?!) and didn't feel anything cold in my neck region. I quickly noticed that I had nothing on under my denim jeans, so big jim and the twins were cuddling up closely to me in no time. 40 minutes later, the boys are still cold, but my neck still warm. I'd say this was well worth the ~40 I spent on it. The only complaint I have is the length of the piece that goes down to cover your neck. I have a long neck, so it barely tucks into the inside of the jacket. Next time I'll try things without a hoodie on underneath (one of several layers I was wearing up top) and see if I can't get it under the jacket better.

One the way back home I hit one of my favorite spots to practice. A nice new parking lot for the local schools new football field. Plenty of room to play, but not exactly level. It's the spot I've hit a few times to experiment with wheelies as well as practice. One direction theres a slight downhill, the other obviously goes up. It pitches very slightly to one side, but nothing that has been an issue yet in my play time.

I think I need to soften up the rear a bit more to get the front end up. I still haven't moved the forks back to the top (did the 10mm drop for quicker turn in) to see if that will help with shifting the weight where it needs to be for one wheeled hoolaginism.

I also think I need to play with the front a bit more, but will be doing a lot more reading before I move anything this go-round. In a hard lean the front end feels like it is ever-so slightly drifting out from under me. I haven't goosed the gas hard enough to get it to really push out, but then again I don't want to low-side trying to find out!
