Toys for Tots

Posted 12-14-2010 at 06:01 AM by beefsalad

My 2nd year participating in my companies Toys for Tots campeign. Last year it was a mid-day excersize in trying to find your way around one of the local bases, while not losing all your coworkers, to get into a lot with no obvious direct entrance. We ended up parking in the dirt close to the drop location and hoofing it the short distance last year. This year, I've got some extra sidestand pucks (soft dirt..) and the same payload as last year... enough hot-wheels to make a few hundred little boys happy. I've seen some of the donations collected at the office, holy crap I home someone has an SUV with a trailer this year. Last year only 1 person showed up in a cage and it was packed so full that he ended up strapping fuzzy wabbits onto the luggage rack.

This year it's going to be a morning run, forecast is calling for a low of 46 the night before, so it could be a chilly ride. Unfortunately, this years ride is less than 5 miles since our HQ has changed locations and is much closer to the base. Last year we had a nice 20mi ride and it was a really nice day. I'm hoping this year we get there a little quicker, and there are not as many cars that are better than mine parked there for gifts. Seriously, there was a freakin escalade that showed up at the same time last year. Someone else noticed too, so we watched them open the doors, 2 kids roll out with the parents, and they go stand in line to collect their loot. I felt like slashing tires.

So I was a bit confused...I forgot I missed last years ride (took a week vacation to get the hell out of the house I was living in with my ex and headed north to see the family) it was the year before. I got a bit more info on the whole escalade fiasco. Apparently 2 years ago (the one I was actually on) we accidentally delivered toys to Wounded Warriors, not Toys for Tots. So this year, TFT and WW both got love and will likely continue to receive it from myself and the other riders in the company I work for. We got a quick tour of the Wounded Warriors facility. Really nice place and well...you didn't pay for it out of your tax dollars! I'm putting my name in to volunteer for WW. I was surprised to hear that there is a waiting list to volunteer. Go humanity!
