testing the winter gear out

Posted 11-17-2009 at 03:46 AM by beefsalad

I came in with most of my layers on tonight, the commute wasn't too bad until Alinosa tried to race me in his F-150. Once we got on the 'home stretch' I hit the gas and damn near slid off the back of my seat. I blame the Tour Master pants and their slick butt. The only thing cold was my nose and eyes. I'll really get to test it on the ride home...theres already 14 degrees (Fahrenheit for you freaky foreigners) difference between then and now. Still an hour and a half until I leave, which could help by a degree or two. Current 42F, hopefully 60F by the time I leave but that's a damn pipe dream (or a night mare...) So I guess I'll see if I need to upgrade the gloves to some Revitts or not. The Olympias I just picked up seem to be pretty good, but I've had liners in them.

Wish me luck! It's a whopping 8.3 miles if I take the somewhat fun route (theres like 2 miles of sweepers close to my house, but 30mph zone, couple of speedbumps, and school kids to watch out for...

I have a couple of pairs of Joe Rocket pants. I find them to be good with jeans underneath. I went out the other night at about 2:00am, temperature was about -2C which is about 28 F. I could only stay out for about 2 hours before I got frostbite on my face. i should really close my visor.

My Aria pushes a lot of air through it, vents/visor closed or not. I found out this morning that I rode home with the front ones on top open. Oh well! I managed to make it just as my fingers started to hurt. I'm considering hippo hands, cheaper than Revvit gloves but look dorky as hell. Also need to get a windshield mounted, not that it'll help when I'm riding normally but if the face gets too cold, I guess I could duck behind it for a bit.

8-9 miles @ 30mph is very tolerable if you have some decent gear. Long johns and a sweater or sweatshirt and a balaclava will make it good. My Fieldsheer pants have been fantastic since christmas down into the upper 20's and I'm in love with my Olympia jacket. I've been running all winter with only my excellent but uninsulated pair of Veloce gloves and I'm going to have to upgrade to a good set of insulated gloves if not go full electric for next winter.

I always enjoy reading your blogs Beef, keep it up buddy!

It's the stretch of 65+mph that was kicking my butt. It went from 2 miles to 5 miles with my last move. Fortunately, it's spring and in south/central TX that means RIDING SEASON IS HERE! It's going to drop down to 46 tonight, but should be in the low/mid 60s by the time I leave work. The advantage to work the graveyard shift (especially in STX) is that I leave for work when the temps have dropped, and by the time I leave things are just heating up again! That's more of an advantage during summer than anything else.

I'm glad someone reads this damn thing! I thought I was doing it for my own amusement for the longest time New post on the way, FYI!
