Sometimes, having the crap scared out of you is a good thing.

I'm not sure if this is one of those times. My bike has 'fallen out' of 2nd gear twice in the last week, both times it has scared the out of me. Both times it was after shifting up from 1st gear. The first one I was coming up to a corner and had just shifted from 1st to second so I could take it smooth and hop on the highway at 60+ (it's one of those nice 270 degree uphill loops) I ended up cramming it into first so I would have power around the corner. I guess that's a good exercise to work on your smoothness. Anyway, I chocked it up to somehow just hitting neutral and not realizing it.

The next event only scared me because I hit redline before I knew what the hell was going on. After a spirited takeoff (on 2 wheels still) and shifting from 1st to second I probably hit 4-5k and then The loss of power probably scared me more than the engine noise. Anyway after my cheeks unpuckered I looked down to see my neutral light taunting me.

I'm starting to wonder if there is something mechanical going on, or if I've picked up a bad habit somewhere. Surely my skis arent resting on the shifter as I tend to have the balls of my feet on the front pegs, and the heels on the back pegs. I'm not saying it couldn't have happened, but I find it hard to believe that I've gone this long and changing form for no reason. My typical riding is the commute to and from work, so it's not like I'm in the hill country doing a ton of shifting in either direction.

And make that a 3rd time I've found neutral from 2nd gear, with my foot under the shifter. I'm really starting to think something mechanical is out of line, but no idea where to start. I guess searching here would be the place.

#4, though tonight I don't think I actually engaged 2nd. I wasn't on the throttle very hard, so it didn't scare me. I'm considering switching to the GP style shift to see if that helps
