Ever been screwed?

Posted 12-04-2010 at 01:47 PM by beefsalad

I got it today. I found a crf450 for sale at a buddies shop yesterday. He knows the history and it was at a smoking price. I don't make purchases over $1k without sleeping on it first (I've found it saves a lot of buyers remorse.) so I went out a few hours later and had a couple of beers, went home and slept them off. I got a call this morning from my buddy saying he needs to do the brakes on his truck and wanted to use my garage (e.g. wants me to do it, since he sucks at turning a wrench.) Not a big deal, other than he showed up 2 hours later than he was supposed to. By the time he got there, it was 10. My bank closes at noon and the most I can pull from an ATM is $500/day. Well, we finally wrapped up around 12:30 and I got him out the door by 1. I hopped on the 9er with the intention of going to the shop, telling them I'm going to put a deposit on it, and hit the bank on Monday and haul it home.

I roll up outside the shop, and I don't see the CRF. I hoped it was inside, but alas...it sold 30 minutes before I got there. They tried to sell me an XR400 with a 440 big bore kit in it, but it just didn't make me cream my drawers like the crf450 did. the XR was a 96 (as opposed to the 05 crf), $700 cheaper, but also pumped out a bit of smoke after starting. Enough to turn me off but I took it for a quick test-ride anyway

I'm shopping craigslist now (damn, I should know better) and the Austin area (about as far as I'm willing to go for this hobby) has several but none seem to be a smoking deal. I also don't know the sellers so that makes things even more difficult. I guess I could drive the ~90mi to the Austin area, probably drive another 60 miles to check out the 4 I'd consider purchasing...but daaaaamn thats a lot of driving when I'm not convinced I'm even coming close to a deal on a bike that may have been molested by it's current/previous owner(s)

Unfortunately, the shop where I found the CRF450 frequently buys from various sources...none of which will pass the story along. He does consignments (which the crf was) but the odds of another crf450 coming in are probably pretty damn slim. Right now he has 2 consignments "on the lot" and 1 the business is selling itself to give you an idea of the volume of bikes he deals with (it's more accessories and repair shop than bike sales..)

The hunt shall continue.
